I tried to look around to see if there was a count of engines that have been replaced due to catastrophic failure. Is there not a thread for this?

My local dealer has 2 gt350's that are having engines replaced. Was told that they were exhibiting major oil consumption due to out of round cylinders. No details on the year, mileage or if it was an "R".

Hmmm... if they were serviced by that dealer (oil changes) I would be weary of taking mine there.

As the 2018 5.0 now uses the same PTWA cylinder coating as the GT350 5.2, we may see more of these failures.

Ford engineers say that the plasma transfer wire arc coating is super durable and that the cross hatching is still visible after 200,000 miles....so I doubt the issue is there.

I understand why, but it is a shame ford isn't more forthcoming about this issue. I don't know if I have two of the greatest mustangs ever built or ticking time bombs.

I'd be shocked if the issue was with the cylinder coatings. It wouldn't be the first time that Ford had out of round cylinder issues though. The cylinder lining has been used by Nissan under Fords patent for over a decade now and it's a non-issue there and they typically run much higher cylinder pressures.

Well said! I sometimes wonder the same thing about my GT350.

my dealer has also replaced 2 engines, 1 for excessive oil consumption and the other had 400 miles and suddenly lost oil pressure and shut off....they thought OPG failure, i saw the inside of the oil filter and it was full of bearing debris
mine at just over 1000 now is amazing, but always watching the oil pressure

the saving grace is ford does not waste much time replacing the long block(as i just found out). so i guess worrying about it won't do much good as you'll just get a new one anyway:cheers:

Well said. Maintain it properly, watch your oil and pressure and then drive it like it was made to be driven. You cant control much after that so, no use worrying about something that may or may never happen.

OP, are you trying to get a count of how many members had engines replaced or just different reasons why? Or both?

My 16 tech had an engine replaced due to excessive oil usage. My 17 has nearly 8k on it and has been fine.

I do think it would be valuable information to try and get a total count (at least of forum members and other sources) of blown engines. things seem to get blown out of proportion when it comes to bad things happening but it does seem there are lot of these occurrences.

2300 miles, tech assumed it was a main bearing, but Ford told them not to split the case...Had a thread about it to document it, but some troll decided to piss all over it and got it closed.
