There is no possible way to install wheel studs without removing the hub.

Question: should the lug nut used to pull the stud though be considered sacrificial?

I'd lube the crap out of said lug nut then clean the studs.

I've used that method before but was left wondering how much stress is actually put on the new stud. The plating ended up looking a little distressed in the area where I used the nut. I've since only used a press. Have a press has paid off enough times to make it worth the investment - it was cheapish.
