Is it normal to smell something burning after driving the first few miles of a brand new car? Pick up my 18 GT yesterday, noticed after the 5 mile test drive kind of smelled something burning. Drove it home about 25 miles, same thing – maybe like oil burning. I just assume maybe that's normal for the first few miles with a new engine, but figured I'd ask. It wasn’t overwhelming, but it was obvious enough for my daughter to ask what that smell was when I first pulled in with it.

It's normal. Exhaust is burning in, as are the cats and some of the sealers and such. It'll go away soon.

I don't associate that with a "burning smell" but you may be correct. Oddly none of my new cars ever did that, just my aftermarket midpipes.

My GT did this, and hundreds of others on this forum reported a mild sort of burning smell in the first maybe 50-100 miles at the most. It does go away. You get similar when you install a brand new catback that has any packing in it.

Mine did it as well. Mine doesn't smell anymore so it'll pass.

My gt did the same thing and the smell lasted for about 500 miles until it was completely gone.

Just the oils and grease burning off. It's normal. Mine lasted 100 miles or so.

My 2015 now has 35000 miles on it and it has started smelling like this for the first time. I've looked it over and under. Everything seems dry as a bone. I can't find the cause. I'm stumped!

I recently picked up a '19 GT and it definitely has what I would describe as "burning" smells going on right now. I think it's a normal part of the break in / new car experience.

That smell when you hit 7000 rpm for the first time, lol. Smelled like my ignition wires were melted.
