IMO The S197 started to look dated as soon as the 2010 refresh happened. Well for me even when the 07 GT500 showed up.

I agree had they stuck close to the concept it would have aged much better, but the 05-09 cars aged horribly IMO. A clean New Edge still make me turn my head, a clean 05-09 eh
Same here.

Aren't they all stating personal opinions and not directly "bashing" any members vehicle or make choice? Unless saying something that offends another indirectly falls under bashing?

Like for example my saying IMO the fox bodies are the worst looking model of all Mustangs.

I am sure Ford did their market research and had focus groups on the design. Are they always right? No.

He was just asking people to return to the topic (with is the S550 refresh) and not to get on a side rail about the S197

The "bashing" comment was a bit of humor hyperbole delivered dryly

Well, at least 2 out of 3 of you understood :p

Yes, it was a joke!

NOW can we get back on topic (at least Topnotch is trying!) :)

I assumed it was humor but also didn't want to misinterpret what can and cannot be said on here.

For me, the S197 still looks good on the outside, though the inside is very dated. I think that if Ford stuck closer to the 2003 concept, it would have aged much better overall.

How could they have stuck to the concept, when the final design for the S197 was approved in late 2001? Development of 2003 concept began in February 2002, as the S197 program was already undergoing design freeze (frozen mid-2002).

Well, again as I told Muff Muff, Ford completed design work on the S197 by December 2001. In February of 2002, while S197 team members and suppliers were working on finalizing production details of the new design, a new project started on a concept to preview the car in 2003.

Ford knew very well the S197 would not be available until late 2004, so a stylish retro teaser in the meantime would tide people over and get them enthusiastic for the SN-95 replacement.

What a lot of people fail to understand is, just because a concept debuts first, doesn't mean it existed first or directly influenced a subsequent model. The Evos and S550 relationship is unique, in which the S550 was partly based on it, since the Evos was a 2010-11 project and the S550 final design was settled on in early 2012, borrowing elements from Evos.

So no, Ford could not make the original S197 look like a concept they developed in 2002, plus manage to have it arrive in time for a late October 2004 sales date on the new D2C.

That became the job of the facelift, which got underway by the beginning of 2005 and fully designed by the spring of 2006. Developed in 2010, the early 2012 (2013 MY) refresh brought the S197 as close as possible to the vision intended with the 2003 concept, since the '05 was too far along to look like the concept.

The new 2018 design was pretty much done by the end of 2015, so one gets the idea how quickly Ford works with development and in advance of intro.

Then you have to look at how much the '94 mustang changed from it's concept.

Since were are on the subject. I think they should shoot for the S550 being a kindred spirit of the 1970 Milano concept. Fight the Challenger at it's own game.. LOL
