We finally caught our first look at the updated 2018 Mustang refresh (prototype) during one of its first public road tests in Dearborn, MI.

With its near full-body camouflage it's difficult to discern the full extent of the aesthetic changes but the heavy disguise suggests that we may see new headlights, revised front fascia and there are hints of a reshaped front grille.

At a glance the refreshed design appears to have shaved down the slight hood bulge seen on the 2015-17 Mustang which has been met with mixed reviews from those that have experienced visibility issues as a result of this design feature. If this change is made it could make for a slightly more flat and leveled hood that may improve visibility. Relatedly, the hood seems to have been lowered by as much as an inch.

The rear of the vehicle is also fully covered to indicate we may get a new light treatment and revised a revised rear bumper that is only partially in place on this 2018 Mustang prototype.

The prototype is also seen wearing what appear to be 2010-12 GT500 wheels used for testing purposes and unlikely to be seen on the production vehicle.

The mid-cycle refresh is expected sometime mid-next year with the public reveal likely in early 2017, possibly at the next Detroit Auto Show.

We'll keep you posted if we spot the new 10R80 10-speed auto transmissions as we try to get a closer look inside one of these prototypes.

Oh man, I'm excited to see what the changes will be.

Are those new wheels too? Reminds me of the EB PP wheels but the spokes aren't as rounded.

OMG yes finally!

Looks like they dropped the hood bulge a lot and leveled it out so it's not as apparent and lowered the hood an 1"...awesome!

New wheels also!

It's starting to look more & more like a European coupe now...not a bad thing...amazing how much they lowered the hood bulge on it...you can see a current model from front 3/4 and see the up tick and on this you can't even really see it at all...thinking they went more with a GT350 type hood. Looks like the vents are gone also.

It's a twin turbo voodoo, obviously. You can tell from the way the exhaust is routed, and from the shape of the radiator.

Fender flares look a little larger and no "flat edge" at the face of the wheel arches.

Wheels are like old GT500 wheels.

Nice find, but under all that camo I'm really having to use my imagination.
