Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I feel like there are too many variables, doing 0-60 runs. I'm hoping the suggested MAF logging will produce some hard, objective data (although I haven't dug into any research on that yet).
Whatever testing I do will be for you guys, so it's got to be...
Agreed. I had assumed aftermarket companies did testing to make sure the flow was similar to OEM filters. That's part of why I've been so surprised by this.
Great info. I actually bought my PP1 from a guy on eBay who bought it, and wound up not using it. Lucky find.
I was worried about pinging also, on California 91. For this reason, I'd originally decided against the kit, until I found one for a decent price.
My logic was similar to yours...
Haha. Fair enough. I think most people like K&Ns. Paper is just my preference. I also tend to buy every car with the intention that it's the last car I'll ever buy, which may be a different mindset from most. Just enjoy your purchase!
Exactly this. It really has been a whole different experience--enough that it moved me to write about it, and I almost never post anything online. Anyhow, I'll put some data up soon. Thanks again!
Thanks for the great reply, G.T. I plan to read up on logging MAF data before I do it. I'd like the test to be as accurate as possible, regardless of what it shows.
My belief that the STP filter was initially fresh, was based only on it looking brand new when I bought the car--and also compared...
Agreed, it is a good suggestion, to do some logs. My response earlier was based on the likelihood of me actually making the time to do it--having no need for the info, myself--and also after having spent a bunch of other time on the car in the last weeks. I've been enjoying finally just driving...
Thanks for all the responses. This is the discussion I was hoping for. Out of curiosity, to those who are doubting the differences I perceived, is your feeling that no amount of over building of an air filter would cause a restriction, or affect power? Or are you feeling like the STP filter just...
That would be interesting, and a good test. Agreed. I'm okay with people doubting the change I observed, by the way. My goal in this post was just to share my experience (which was shocking to me), and to hear others' insights, particularly regarding the pictures, which I think are also...
Thanks for the reply. I agree that most air filter modifications will make little difference, going from stock (even though I do think some engines have gained a few horsepower from just a K&N filter). I think most filters flow well enough as is, though. Agreed.
To clarify, I was referring to...
Correct, I have no additional data. I certainly hope no one is misled by anything I've said though. This is just one man's experience, with pictures, for people to share their thoughts on. I appreciate yours, and respect your conclusion.
That's a good point. Hopefully the Motorcraft is just the right balance between filtration and flow. Maybe blindly, but I tend to trust that it is.
While I'm thinking about it, I just wanted to mention that this is not intended to be a slam on STP. Not at all. In fact, the overall quality of...
Thanks for the reply. Good point. It's possible that it's the placebo effect, or any other number of unseen factors, that's making the car run stronger. I don't believe so though. These are some pretty significant differences that I'm talking about--differences that surprised me. I just got home...
Thanks for the reply. I believe that, about your Saab. I think that because of where the air filter is in the system of an engine, small differences in it can make huge differences in running. We don't normally see that though, I suspect because most air filters flow enough. It's the rare...
