I see S550's almost every day in Flagstaff (7000+), and have been since April of last year. If they stated the fenders are Al, wouldn't they have mention other parts of the unibody also?
Zeta is a way better chassis than the el cheapo S197, and the latest evidence is that the Boss 302 got held down and absolutely dry raped by a mere 1LE. Wasn't even close either, more than a second at Motown Mile (Road & Track). Let's not forget 2.5 second quicker lap time the 1LE hang up on the...
The weight and suspension are intrinsically linked, but yes if you could pull 300-500 pounds out of the car and maintain the Camaro's powerdown and grip it would be faster. But it's truly asinine to think that bean counters wanted to save $150 bucks on a model that is the performance flagship...
I trust them just as much as a Ford media car. Racing is a function of the rule book du jour and team quality; if the Camaro is slower in whatever series but faster in real life, it only shows the Mustang gets more help through racing politics, or the other way around depending the year. More to...
I agree, the experience comes first. I'd rather drive a base Focus with a manual than a 5.0 with automatic.
I was too young but it's an interesting era.
I'm aware that larger tires can be fitted in the aftermarket, but Ford chose the tire combo they did because they were constrained by...
The problem for Ford is that are many more bits and pieces of reality that show the Camaro is the better drivers and track car since 2012.
GT500 vs ZL1: Holistically and qualitatively, not just in numbers, the ZL1 has trounced the GT500. Read the C/D review; "one is a gorilla, the other is a...
The 1LE is an option package on the SS, similar to the Track Pack on the Mustang, and their pricing is much closer together than the 302. Boss 302 is it's own model and is 4K more expensive than a 1LE. I know the Boss is not as good of a track car as the 1LE, and that Ford should be embarrassed...
This place has good S550 info, which I'm interested in, but there's some detachment from reality that I'm addressing. I'm not much of a brand loyalist; I've had both a S197 and my current car.
The SS 1LE badly beats up on the Track Pack, and even takes out the 302LS which is more expensive. I've never seen an FE4 (2012) SS against the GT, although the first year of the 5.0 (2011) was faster than a 2010 SS (not tested the same day however) at LL. So for 2011 the Mustang was definitely...
If all you do is go in a straight line, then the Mustang is better for you. Holistically the Camaro has been better since the 2012 chassis tuning; even the 1LE ran a faster LL than a Boss 302LS, and the ZL1 smoked the GT500 by a significant margin despite having more weight and less power, which...
I know Randy said that, but if you read all the comparison test together the net take away is that the ZL1 has a way better chassis. S550 can't get here soon enough.
That line of reasoning is does not wash in my view; no way in hell is Ford going to lose to the ZL1 just to save a few hundred bucks on tires, on the performance flagship none the less. I based my statement on an interview with a Ford engineer where he states the new S550 front suspension allows...
As an example of what development dollars can do to a chassis, compare a 2007 GT500 with 2013 GT500. Alpha will have the advantage of amortizing cost and development, which is a big difference maker. S550 will be hugely improved, but GM is just better at RWD right now.
By three generations I was referencing the 4th generation (F-body vs. SN-95) and 5th gen (Zeta vs S197 which holistically went to GM unless you only focus on the strip). It's not looking good for S550 with Alpha being such a dominant and lightweight chassis that is slated for even more...
My understanding is that Ford could not fit any bigger tires and still maintain OEM ride quality or steering feel because S197's cheap suspension. IRS and double ball joint front suspension will fix this.
As for GT500 vs ZL1 track times, of the three test I know about where the cars were...
I don't think GM would put out a car like the Z28 if it wasn't substantially faster than the ZL1, a car with less HP and more weight that somehow embarrassed the GT500 on a track. But now with S550 Ford can but on larger tires, so the field is level until Alpha shows up.
I wouldn't consider the S550 just an upgraded platform; it's so torn up that it is more accurate to say its "all-new" than an upgrade, Periack said he considers it to be an all new platform and even the floorpan is new. I think the only carry over stamping is the firewall, and the E.A. is prob...
I also have an ATS, coming from a 2010 GT, and the Alpha car is a freaking light year ahead of the current Mustang chassis. The only thing the Mustang did better was steering feel, but thats EPS vs. hydraulic. I think the next round of the pony car wars will also go to GM for two reasons 1)...
