Make sure you are absolutely positive about whatever you do, I had a similar situation bringing an American car to Canada, found out it was not acceptable to bring this model into the country and had to return and sell it in the US. What a pain, there are differences that you may not realize...

The only way possible to break the snap catch is during removal or installation.
Since I never removed the part it must have cracked when it was put together and it has taken a year of bumping around to crack thru.
