Actually the 6.2 does require it. 11:5 compression ratio and direct injection are the main culprits. On camaro 6 they have the manual for the 6.2l available for everyone to see and it specifically stated that it is required.

Ditto on the power wash before you actually hand wash it, That will mitigate as much dirt mixing in with your soap. Also make sure you are cleaning whatever you use to wash the car with as that will have old residue from your prior washing.
