I’d have to look back at some emails, but I think a rebuild of a gen 5 3.0L was quoted as something like $1800 for labor, bearings, seals, and other consumables. Shipping to Whipple isn’t cheap, maybe another couple hundred. $2k is a far cry from a new supercharger kit.
But if you want the gen...
Personally, if I knew of a shop I trusted to do at least as good of a job as I know I can do, I’d pay to have it done. I did TSP headers on my car and subsequently went back to stock manifolds recently, both times on the garage floor with jack stands.
A few things that helped me along the way...
If I had a project car and I wanted a DCT in it, I’d do a BMW DCT swap. That swap has gotten to be pretty well sorted and there are several stand alone transmission controllers out there along with some stand alone PCMs that can control them natively.
If I wanted a fast, highly integrated...
Here’s a snip from a log using shift character 2 (drag mode) in the 1/4 mile on a 10R80. This is from a Whipple cal, but it uses almost entirely OEM shift character data. I lowered the torque modulation on the 1>2 and 2>3 shifts, which is why torque drops on those shifts, but the rest are...
If you can, log the catalyst temps for both banks and see if they get above 900°f. There is some logic buried in the calibration that is a catalyst temp target do drop CSER idle speed down to normal idle speed. In my experience, the target is 900°f.
If your inferred cat temps go above 900°f and...
Got a check engine light and P0420/0430. When I removed them one was starting to come apart, there was a hole in the material, and the other had developed cracks but hadn’t come apart yet.
I smelled it on my car when it was bone stock doing WOT pulls on the autobahn. No issues with cats until I put a Whipple on the car. Killed them in an afternoon on midwestern back roads.
I toasted both stock GT cats when I had the Whipple on my 2019. One started to come apart like the pics @engineermike shared and the other just had cracks but I had P0420 and P0430.
Based on the pics, those look good on the 18x5. I struggled with this dilemma when I was putting my drag setup together. I knew they’d see much more street use than drag strip use, but the options for an 18x5 outside of dedicated drag tires are nearly non-existent.
I didn’t even consider...
This was my experience when I had a Whipple on my gen 3 for ~20,000 miles.
I changed the oil kinda whenever (every 4-5k miles), checked it frequently (every couple fuel fill ups), and never saw any use that required topping it up.
It's not a traction issue in my case. 100% confirmed not a traction issue. It happens at the same speed in one specific gear over and over in my case. In my case I was able to fix it through some calibration adjustments.
On my car before the Whipple I would have to go waaaaay back in time on...
I have had similar experiences as @2019GT
Here are two screenshots from the same log at the same point in time on my car when it had the Whipple on it. I also know I am not the only one who has experienced this with a similar setup. The TC light flashes and everything.
You can see the yellow...
How are you getting 60-130 times if it’s requiring a shift to 7th but you’ve been told not to hit 7th WOT?
You very obviously have some issues with the car. I suggested your torque converter lockup could be an issue in your other thread based on the stated conditions.
Seems that could also...
