The connections are in the right place.
It reads like you installed the tender while the battery was still connected at both posts? If so, that could cause the conditions you mentioned. If you had disconnected the battery prior and then installed the tender...
The sleeve should stay in place, to keep the fuel trims at a good point.
If the sleeve is removed, fuel trims reach their outter limit. Little to no variance or adjustment by the car is left.
Keeping the sleeve has no impact on HP. Remove the filter only and you're GTG.
FWIW, it seems more cold temps and condensation than anything else. I'd think if it was oil or coolant, the smoke would be 1) denser and 2) remain in the air longer.
Being a new buy, I'd continue to check fluid levels, hot and cold, record and continue to monitor, for confidence.
