Question is, if Botas hadn't pitted to set the fastest lap, could he have finished 2nd?

But in that scenario, Verstappen would have stayed out and Checo could have maybe pitted for fresh tires to set the fastest lap. It amazing that they are so competitive that they are fighting tooth and nail to gain every last point. You have to think that someone is going to have a bad stop and lose a guaranteed position trying to get a fastest lap, and thus lose more points than they can gain. But if it works 9 out of 10 times, I guess it's worth it.
Now as Monday morning quarterbacks imagine doing this on the fly with your cars going around the track every minute, thirty seconds or so. Toto is as much a genius in the pits as Louis is behind the wheel. Yesterday was a total team effort.

I guess if you have some keen interest in those running in mid pack the races can have some interest.
A true race fan enjoys wheel to wheel racing wherever it happens on the track. Fernando, Seb, Kimi, all world champions racing as if they were in the lead. Ferrari finally starting to make some noise, Lando, Sergio, Esteban, racing well. And, of course Lewis hunting down Max. If you fell asleep maybe you should try NASCAR! 😂🤣👍

Hello; Good for you that you got enjoyment from the race. Honda engines and Redbull are a bit more competitive but is is still pretty much one team wins and then the rest fight for the scraps.

I do not disagree but welcome to Formula 1. Been that way for decades. Now to your point, I agree, next year could be very interesting.

The strategists at Mercedes are next level
Nothing against Toto but frankly the strategists at RedBull have been wrong over and over and over. They need some real AI. Their meatspace should be put out to pasture. What idiot thought they could hold onto yellows for 42 laps and also manage to keep 1st when the longest they've ever been run at that track was ~35 laps?

My guess is they hired the top climate change scientists to write their code.

At least the best team wins. Not the one with the best BOP.

You are so right. It's almost like Toto's in their head. Same with Ferrari a few years ago. It‘s like they are looking for ways to lose.

As soon as Hamilton pitted, RB knew what Merc was planning. What did RB do?

Nothing.
It was over at that point. If they had pitted he would have come out behind Hamilton.

And MB had better pace on the medium tires all weekend...so there was no hope.

When Hamilton re-entered on lap 43, he was over 23 seconds behind Verstappen. If Max had pitted on the next lap, he would have had a chance to come out behind Bottas, but in front of Lewis.

The commenter pointed this out as Hamilton left the pits, saying, “They’ve (Mercedes) caught them (RB) unawares. They’ll have to pit Verstappen now. Surely”

Better to fight Hamilton on fresh tires than dead ones.

Absolutely. And if beating him on old tires with a twenty-something second lead was going to be hard, imagine if there had been a safety car. Even if he had come out behind Lewis and a safety car happened later, he'd have an easier job passing Lewis right after said safety car than keeping the 20 some second lead on old tires with or without a safety car.
