The problem comes when trying to debate with extremists (who usually don't realise they are extremists (left / right / religious) is that they have the following characteristics and it makes discussions quite difficult as they will not change their views or even see that other views are viable. You cannot change the mind of an extremist very easily hence the reason deradicalisation is so difficult. Luckily most of the world holds more considered and moderate views (including in the US) and it is these moderates who actually decide who governs (extreme right and left will never change their views and so cancel each other out)

The irony is that I have seen no evidence of extreme left wing posting on here (plenty of right wing) or at least not on a level that would be considered left wing in the UK. (Obama would be centre right in the UK - that is how right biased the US is) That isn't to say that you don't have left of your centre people in the US just that the whole political setup is skewed to the right compared to many other countries.

• Both are entirely sure of their position.
• Both advocate and sometimes use violence to achieve their ends.

My question is easy. Why is it still acceptable to be a Democrat? Have you ever heard of moderate, middle of the road views / voters ? You would no doubt denounce them as ''sheep' in you usual demeaning way. There are good and bad things about left and right and it is possible to run by consensus in moderation. All words and terms completely alien to you.

Just remember you are completely unimportant when it comes to voting. Your extreme right views are matched by the extreme left wing people and as mentioned before, extremists never change their views no matter how strong the evidence presented to them. Elections are won by what we call 'floating voters' and you call 'sheep' - these are people who vote differently throughout their life based on the events and information at each election. These moderate middle of the road people actually decide the vote. Modern election campaigns know all about this and target these people to swing them in their favour. They also try and get people to vote who don't normally if they think they will support their side.

While this opinion seems to be widely accepted today and taught in most schools outside the UK, the truth is a bit more nuanced. I also used to think that the British empire was a bad thing, but now I'm not so sure anymore. The effects of the British empire on the rest of the world were incredibly complex, and if you take a close look at all of them and examine them with an open mind, you'll see that the empire wasn't actually that evil monster we all grew up learning about.
I recommend you read this book. It's absolutely superb - nicely written, well documented, and, unlike many history books, very easy and pleasant to read. It will open your eyes and will make you see the British empire differently.

As for hating America, while I cannot speak for any forum member in particular, I can tell you that the overwhelming majority of the people in the free world do not hate it. Quite the contrary. We look up to it. When we express critical opinions on the American government and/or president, we don't do it because we hate America. We do it for two reasons:
First, because the American politics has a strong tendency to influence (or even to directly affect) the rest of the world. If the king of, say, Belgium, does something stupid, non-Belgians couldn't care less about it, because it wouldn't affect anything and anyone outside Belgium. When the Romanian president does something stupid, we're the only ones to suffer; nobody outside Romania will give a damn about it, and rightly so. But when the American president does something stupid, this can have serious consequences all over the world. There's an old saying: when America sneezes, the rest of the world takes aspirin.
Second, because, as I said, we look up to America. We want America to be strong and healthy. It hurts us when it isn't. When we criticize Trump, we don't do it because we hate America, but because we love it, and we hate to see the damage he's doing to it. Incidentally, I'm not necessarily anti-Trump. I'm a bit torn - I don't like him as a person, but I dislike the alternative even more. So I don't know in which camp I'd fit. If I had the right to vote in America, it would be a tough decision for me. Not that it would be something new for me as a Romanian; we've always been voting for the smallest evil for the past thirty years, and there's no sign that this will change any time soon. We have elections this fall, and I have no idea whom to vote for. I despise them all.
