5th to 6th shift issue

I was on the freeway this morning 20min in to my commute and I down shifted to 5th to pass and then back into 6th and it made a quick grinding noise and went in. 5th now grinds going to 6th at any speed. If I shift it super slow it wont grind. It has never had an issue shifting beforehand. The car has 1200 mi on it and has yet to be beat on. Will an after market shifter fix the issue or is it a take it to the dealer thing wich I am not looking foward to

Suppose it could be linkage, shift fork, or synchros.

If it was an older tremec that had the shifter bolted to the trans I would say syncros all day long. But with the remote shifters I am not familiar with the newer issues

If you shift slow and it does not grind it's the synchro.. sorry to say. Take it to the dealer.

Question, to the OP and everyone else that has a 350. The only time I hear something if when I go from 5th to 6th and let the clutch out quickly. If I go 5th to 6th and wait an extra second, what I thought, the transmission makes no sound. The shift itself doesn't grind or get kicked out of gear either so I didn't think it was synchros. Only audible sound made me think it was the transmission. It feels like it shakes. Idk if thats the best way to describe the feeling.

OP, I assume my behavior is what you're trying to describe. I thought it was because 6th was the overdrive gear and it was just normal for it to do that. Cause rpms go from 3000 to a sudden drop of 1,500.

The odd time I shift to 6th gear I always put it into neutral first for half a second and then go into 6th. I do not try to ham fist it into 6th.

I never use 6th unless I’m on the highway cruising at 120 or so.

I call it the 'Penalty Gear'. It gets you an extra 1-2 mpg but penalizes you into thinking your Shelby has turned into Prius.

That is why if you try to shift into 6th the car gives you the momentary WTF sensation.

Had the same thing happen with my 5th. Synchro went, gnawed up 5th, 4th and took a hunk out of 3rd. Ford covered everything under warranty without question.

They rebuilt mine for me. Whole host of replacement pieces. New 3rd, 4th and 5th gears, new synchros. I was surprised that they didn't want to just do a swap.
