So I drove my GT500 2 weekends ago for the first time in a month or so. No issues and parked her but didn’t cover her like I had for a good month. And she sits in my shop like my other cars so no big deal. Today I give her a nice bath and while drying her off i open the hood only to find this:frown: And I will call the dealer and send pics to replace it If my patch doesn’t hold. But damn those little bastards and I have been told today’s wiring harness material is no longer petroleum based and it’s a all natural coating which the little animals love to eat. Anyone storing their car I would highly recommend you check it regularly.

What is all the orange/pink fluffy stuff, it looks like fiberglass insulation.

I always put down fast acting rat poison, for the mice in my case. Also I usually forgo car covers and just use 2 mil painters plastic.

Yes fiberglass insulation and I have had my shop for close to 20 years and have never seen this. And I have nice cars that sit for months in my shop so it’s a first. And have to wonder If the new materials they are using versus petroleum based materials is the reason. A car mechanic friend of mine who owns a tire shop says he sees today’s modern cars have this issue more than ever. He claims the squirrels and mice eat up people’s wiring harnesses all the time it’s a constant problem.

I had rats get into my 04. They built right under the windshield behind the firewall. They didn’t destroy to much luckily.

Rat piss is a smell that never goes away. Sold the car.

I have stick and rat traps all over my buildings now.
I have dogs and lots of them lol just way too risky and having that really nice snug cover on her for a good 6 weeks I guess created this. And the posting is to alert all here today’s car materials are environmentally friendly which unfortunately attracts the rodents so more of a heads up posting.

Throw a couple of these around the garage.

Edited to add:

I see you have dogs. Put the poison in one of these

Thomas: Unfortunately, if you have pets that frequent the garage, you can't have enticing poison bricks around, unfortunately.

I had a rat eating my soap and got him/her with a traditional rat trap. But something is still nibbling at my hand soap so...

..after seeing GG's heartbreaking post, I'm gonna head to Homeless Depot or MacLowes today to see if I can find some "rodent hotels" that the pups can't get after.

That is what the bait station is for, so that animals that don't belong eating the rat poison cant get to it.

Sorry, Tom, I didn't scroll down far enough on the image to see the "hotel," I thought it was just a tub of cyanide bricks.

When I did scroll down after you replied, it reminded me that I bought one for an outside area some time back. Went out and it was still there. Had the original bucket with the bricks so I put one up inside the hotel and put it in place. Also set the traditional rat trip. I learned that they can pull the bait off without triggering the release so I now SEW the bait to the trigger. :-)

Checked the cars and thankfully, no damage so we'll see.

Rodents have been chewing on car wiring since the first car showed up, not to mention all the pooping, peeing and nest building.

Right and for sure over the many many years I have seen this in cars and trucks and suvs and boats. But apparently according to my friend the new eco friendly materials has made it even worse. He claims its a huge issue and has rewires all the time more than seen so many years ago. This is the reason I am posting this since most here will store their car for many many months especially the cold winter month owners. And as I said I have owned many many nice cars and have parked them for 3-4 months and have never had this ever happen in all the years I have owned cars.

I wonder if a couple of the Ultrasonic Pest Repellers would work out in the garage? I have 2 in my garage that have been there for 10 or 12 years and I have only seen 1 rodent (rat pup) and he was trying to get out the back door. I ended up catching him with a trap that I set up next to the back door.
I also have 2 cats that do a pretty good inspection of the garage every time they go out.

Earl: Me thinks as long as you don't over-feed those kitties, <smile> you don't need the ultrasonic. I've seen those things for gophers and I doubt they work much if at all in ridding the area of unwanted rodentos. Way too many years of evolution under their belts, just like La Cucaracha. :-)

I had a neighbor with a gopher problem and he decided to use the stakes that emitted a noise that gophers hate, when he went out the next morning he was missing 2 of the stakes and finally found them buried in a gopher mound. I guess the gopher hated the noise bad enough that he decided to bury the source.
My luck, I would put them out and it would drive the gophers into a mating frenzy. That's all I need, a bunch of fornicating tunnel rats tearing up my lawn.
