I remember when the 6th gen S550 Mustang was revealed by Ford. There was some press confrence where some of the executives stood in front of one (a convertible I think) and they talked about the features of the car over the previous generation of Mustangs. One of the guys on the stage mentioned that the S550 car was designed as a convertible from the ground up. I remember seeing this video on youtube a few years ago, but I cant seem to find it.

Does anyone remember this video or someone at Ford talking about the convertible being built as one from the ground up?

It's a Ford Motor video. Do a YouTube search for:
2015 Mustang Tech Convertible

Has anyone else noticed the top caps in this video are the same (or similar) material to the top???

I think it looks much better that way.

Nice catch
I never noticed as well, wouldn’t mind them looking the same.

I never use mine either. But I still like the cloth look more. Cost probably was a factor.

If you could source the material it wouldn't be that hard to cover the plastic ones. It might even help prevent the damage some of them can cause.
Of course, like most, I don't use them. Still something I'll keep in mind. Maybe if a come across one in a junk yard I'll grab a couple pieces and give it a go.

Yeah, that’s definitely wrapped in top material. That would certainly be more expensive and I’m sure the bean counters squashed it. That said, I think the vast majority of these are sitting in basements or garages. I only put mine on when we’re going for a “drive”, otherwise it’s not worth the bother.

Those covers are the vestiges of the "boot" on older convertibles that covered the whole folded top. Never put the boot on my older convertibles and wished I had. They used to fold so the inner liner and front header weatherstrip faced up at the sun. Needless to say they got bleached and rotten. The S550 top folds so the top material faces up. Its a big improvement. The window seals still get sun on them so the covers are a good idea even if inconvenient.
