BTW I am considering a Uniden R7 and need advice from current RD owners where the ideal location would be, the options being -
  • Under the mirror using a blendmount type of bracket
  • between the rear-view mirror and head liner
  • clipped to the visor
  • On the dashboard or in the middle of the windshield with a concealed mute button somewhere on the steering column
What I am apprehensive about is if the visor/under mirror mount will be too close to my eyes/head. Looking at other examples in rdforum/google image search is not very helpful as the images seem to be from bigger cars/pickups where there is much more space than the mustang.

This is a hard question to answer, as different positions work better or worse for different height people are what you are willing to lose from your frontal view. I typically have mine on a mount directly under the mirror. Currently have the one in the Mustang mounted low on the windshield while awaiting a mirror mount, and if it wasn't for the cord running down, it wouldn't be too bad.

I would try to put it behind the rear view mirror instead so you can't see it. That way any cops that stop you won't see it either.

Under the mirror with a Blendmount and a wiretap is a great location for an R7. Mine is extremely sensitive in this location, it's tucked up tight by the mirror, not un the way of anything (including line of site) and is easy to see and adjust.

I'd mount it just like on my truck, since both have the same mirror. I used a BlendMount too, adjusted to barely clear the mirror, and also flush with the mirror, but that requires using the detector on the FIRST detent. Since it fits quite loose there, I use a square piece of hard rubber under the adjusting tab, and it firms it up perfectly (and doesn't slide to the front when pressing the mute button, for instance), and doesn't have any vibration either. And source of power for the MirrorTap cable is right behind the mirror, so the easiest installation of any car. By the way, I always remove the mirror to adjust the bracket perfectly as far as depth and height. Once mounted, I readjust with a level side to side, and front to back. Hope this helps :).

I don't know if that's a good setup as that Uniden has both a front and rear facing waveguide antenna

Blendmount and wiretap here. It’s pretty close to the mirror like others mentioned. If you’re constantly needing access to the top buttons, that could be frustrating. I personally don’t care for hanging power cords or suction cups though. My RD is old but it still saves my @$$.

Edit: my blendmount is from my old STi but it works on my mustang. It appears the blendmount actually made for the mustang has a little better spacing from the mirror. I leave my RD in auto mode though so it’s really not an issue for me.

Mine is suctioned to the windshield about 2 inches above the dash. Works fantastic unless i'm going over a 120 and then the detection time decreases substantially.

Edit: I have the R3

ESCORT iX with a Blend Mount and wire tap on the Rear View Mirror

Perfect location. :like:

I can remove it from the Blend Mount and disconnect the wire in 5 seconds if your worried about cops seeing it. The Blend Mount has a quick release magnetic mount to the radar detector. I never had to do that but you could. Also with that location you can adjust every thing easily including the brightness. If a Cop is behind me I'll make it darker so nobody see's it. Not sure why I do that but okay.

The higher you can mount it the better results you'll get. Mounting it the foot or so higher under the mirror will improve that detection time.

Valentine 1, with mirror tap for power.

Mounted to windshield with 3M Dual Lock tape, taped to windshield and to radar mount, so it can be taken off the dual lock.

Radar is left side, very hard to see. Right side is the PeachTree pass.
