So I have a genuine FOMOCO GT350 shift knob with the 10mm threads. I am getting the 12mmX1.25 tap tomorrow and was wondering how deep do I drill out the threads? I have a 27/64 drill bit, but I don't want to drill it out too deep.... if that's even possible, could be I drill it down completely, I'm just not sure.

Any help would be much appreciated.

What type of tap, starting tap or bottoming tap ?
Are you drilling and tapping freehand or fixtured in vertical mill ?
The short answer is don't go any deeper than the thread length on the shifter stem.

I'll be using my drill press....its got a setting for tap but I'll probably be using the tap wrench and doing it by hand....little more control....but I will be drilling out with the press.

I suppose I'll take a set of calipers and measure out how long the stem is....just wondering if people are drilling out the entire knob and that is working sufficiently
