Dave TBG is right, old school, plus the steering on many cars in the '50s or there-abouts were heavy, and in a long race you could also get blisters. Likewise 'driving shoes' were like the Pumas in Chef jpd post, narrow because many of the European sports cars of the same vintage had very closely spaced pedals because of small pedal boxes. The soles were also grippy rubber (in an era when most people wore leather soled shoes), because a lot of the pedals were smooth bare metal.
