Could not drum up anything on a search. I have done a fair bit of autocross and road course through the years. Lately with my mustang I am having a fair bit of fun doing track days, and my budget can take it a little better. With that being said, it has been recommended I go to a 3 digit number panel, as opposed to my good ole 68.
I had the thought of going with 550 to pay tribute to the new platform, but then I got to thinking there is a fair chance many others came up with this idea to.
Am I asking for a headach and painters tape numbers if I get 550 number panels made?

I dont think Ive ever seen that number out at the track. I bet you would be good much more often than not. I went to a three digit when I had door magnets made. Id be mad if I spent 80 bucks and still had to use painters tape all the time.

Are you racing in some sort of sanctioned event(s) with certain organizations? If so then I would imagine you would have to ask them what numbers have been registered and see if 550 is available.

If you're just running DE days with no such legal numbering, then noone's going to complain or bother you if you put 550 on your car and someone else has it since it's just for decoration and means nothing.

Actually, if the number has been registered, you will be required to use the tape for an additional digit. Register early and its a moot point. But yeah, I've seen it happen with guys that run all the time. Its why I went with a 3 digit number as most use 2+ tape if needed.

I have been given a go ahead at two track with a the tech guy saying next time you need three digits. They use the numbers to keep track of people on the radio. Not sure why three digits is preferred, but it is. I know they are a bit frustrated when my friend and I are at the same track as we are both 68 and blue. His is a 68 Camaro though lol

Years ago when I ran PCA events, single digits numbers were reserved for club officers, two digits for instructors and 3 digits for everyone else. I think I saw a few 4 digit numbers. Lots of people just got 2 sets of 0-9 magnets so they could stick just about anything on the car.
