I’m fine with my stock wheels on my 17 GT but wanting a wider contact patch.

Anyone see a problem putting that size tire on the car that currently has 235/50/18? I am considering this oddball size as it is the closest to the stock circumference.

does the manufacture's recommended rim width even list 8 as an option?

Discount tire has 5 tires in this size that list the rim width between 8, and 10 inches.

Trying to better prep the car for boost without changing wheels at the moment.

I'm no authority but most of what I've read online would suggest that for handling purposes, 245 would be as wide as you should go with an 8" wheel. I know some people have gone to 255. But above that you get problems where even if the tire physically fits on the rim, the sidewall is too pinched and the contact patch gets distorted, which affects handling and tire wear.

255/45/18 would still be pretty close to the OEM tire circumference.

255/45r18 absolute max. 235-245 far better fit. Going wider on a narrow rim is pointless and won't put any additional rubber on the road, along with having sloppy handling.

I believe the recommendation is 8.5" wide to run that size tires. Might want to look a size down or a wider wheel

There I was, feeding my sidewall to the ground, when all of a sudden...

That's a whole extra inch of wheel width for 10 cm more section width compared with OP's ask.

275 on a 9" is generally OK, but more than that not really. For autocross it helps more than hurts, as you've found.

Right, that is what I find in a quick tire spec check at the Tire Rack.

Remember that taller side walls often allows a smaller wheel for a given width per the manufacturers recommendations.

265/45 carries a recommended range of wheel widths ranging from 8.5" to 10". That's a tire industry standard, and while it doesn't guarantee that you'll have issues or problems by going outside it on the low end, you would be running it in a manner that would tend to increase sidewall flexing and heat generation (tire enemies) and softer, less precise handling and cornering. Dare I think 'numb', even . . .

If a wider contact patch is what you're chasing, look for tread width dimensions in 255/45. That at least lists 8" as the minimum recommended fitment. I'd defy you to notice the difference in section width (at the maximum sidewall bulge) once mounted and installed on the car.

It's not worth obsessing over matching the OE tire diameter exactly.
