Why the extreme difference in gas mileage? Must be weight? Other? Thanks for the help.

If you take a civic engine and put it in a f350 is it still gonna get 40mpg?

So answering my own question...the Explorer weighs about 4600 pounds and the Ecoboost weighs around 3500 pounds. Roughly 1000 pounds heavier for the Explorer.

I had no idea it was that much heavier.

So how much does an F-350 weigh? Rhetorical question there.

Everything: ride height, tires, gearing, airflow design, weight, computer calibration for towing, transmission. Ones a brick the other isn't.

I had one of the last generation (2011) F250 Diesel 4x4 trucks that got 20 mpg. 7700 lbs. NEVER should have sold it.
Since the 2.3 only gets 24 mpg in the new Explorer, I'm tempted to get the 400 hp ST for my wife's next ride. She's in a 3.5 Ecoboost Explorer Sport currently. We can eek out 22 mpg every now and then. BUT... the new Explorer is RWD primarily. So 400 hp with RWD will be hoonin' time in the wifey's car. We have to fool the current car to have fun. It's snowing today, so I put it in Sand mode (which turns off the traction control, locks the AWD and makes the throttle more sensitive. She's so used to it she was texting while I was drifting the 4500 lb beast.

@Radiation Joe
I’m currently in a Explorer ST as a loaner while my S550 is in service. Here’s my small review on it:

If you’re looking to definitely buy an ST equipped Explorer, it’s money well spent. :)

I’ve been in it now going on 3rd week and I can actually attest that due to my driving route and distance driven the ST is getting 23.2 mpg - no kidding at all - and that’s not messing with the fuel MPG resets... That’s actual and true MPG using it in Normal and Eco modes. Now of course if you’re going to consistently play in Sport Mode, don’t expect a 4,700+lb 400HP Beast to get anywhere near 23mpg... LOL

The new Ranger with the same basic drivetrain as the Ecoboost Mustang is in the same boat at the Explorer as far as MPG comparison.

Here is one that should be closer to apples to apples but is not:

2018 2.0T FWD A/T Fusion EPA: 21/31/25 MPG
2016 2.3T RWD M/T Mustang EPA: 22/31/25 MPG
Window stickers are almost exact, but the 2018 Fusion gets worse real world MPG's than my 2016 Mustang.

Similar aerodynamics, tires, etc. and the published "curb weight" of Fusion is a hair less than the Mustang too.

Took a trip out to Spearfish, SD in both cars ... pretty much drove the same speeds, etc:
Mustang Memorial Day weekend:
1831.2 Miles / 61.462 Gallons = 29.793 MPG
Fusion Labor Day weekend:
2037.9 Miles / 72.93 Gallons = 27.943 MPG

Both running Ethanol Free 91 Octane fuel.

We did have 2 kids with us on the Labor day trip (maybe an extra 250 lbs. between the two of them including luggage). The extra 200 miles was driving around out there with 5 people (drove son's car around in May as neither my wife or other son wanted to sit in the back seat of the Mustang).

I was actually impressed that the Fusion did as well as it did on the trip since the real world everyday mileage is much worse (23-25 mixed).
