Would fitting a 285 to a PP1 9.5 inch rim in a square set up would be competitive? Or should I get an actual 10 inch wide rim and go for a 285. Is there difference in cornering putting a 285 on a 9.5 inch wide rim, instead of going to the 10 inch wide wheels?

you didn’t mention where and how you want to compete.

Wider everything seems to be always faster as long as turns are involved... rulebooks tend to matter so make a plan.

Well his question is a good one, I am no tire expert, and a 9" rim will except a 275. I want to run a 305 wide tire on my DD with 19x10 wheels. The drag may be fine but the track not so much someone who has experience needs to chime in on this. Maybe Norm?

you may need a spacer to keep the tire from rubbing front suspension parts. 305 wide is typically best on a 11. Apex' fitment guide is a good resource to consult. It also matters who's 305 you're wanting to run but they'll probably tramline pretty badly. For DD on 10's I think 285 wide is where you want to go. I personally will be running the PS4S 255/40 on 9.5 and the 275/40 on 10.5 unless the stretch is ridiculous. My all season 275/35 I run on 9.5's.

Most 285 will work on a 19x9.5” wheel, its only a little pinched. I’ve run many sets of 285s on 9.5” and even 9” wheels due to rules where stock wheel widths were required.

Of course that 285 would work a bit better on an 11” (yes, 11) wheel, so again for competition, whats optimal depends on the rules.

then for $600 $900 buy yourself some 19x11et24 and 19x11et50 wheels! No spacer nonsense. MRR M600-series.

^^ are coming from CarID so you can buy thru that website instead...
Not really a square setup as far as rotating wheels to even out tire wear. Square for handling only, which is only half the point. Rotating wheels front to back to get more life out of your tires and not having to replace tires on each axle at different intervals is a huge win for the autox and track day crowd.
