I'd look into the "Bull Run" type of event. Expensive, but already organized, and insured. Probably not the same kind of Law-Scoffing adventure the OP is seeking, but fast and fun.

There's also an open-road event in Nevada that might fulfill some kind of Need For Speed. And, something similar in Mexico.

As for wanting to see Mustangs and Mustangers in the record books, I think it's the same kind of impulse that has resulted in branding the pony jockeys leaving Cars And Coffee events sideways and crunched. That's already in the record, and doesn't require supplement.

As far as I'm concerned, the OP and his Mustang Pipe Dream are already immortalized, here.

No way you can even average over 100 MPH with 10 fuel stops.Doug Tabbutt and Arne Toman just broke the record with like only 3 stops. They still had to make sprints up to 170ish MPH to get their average just over 100 MPH. You would need way more fuel to cut fuel stops down, and without more sets of eyes (human and electronic) It really is fairly impossible to do what you're talking about. you definitely need to do more research. records are made to be broken, and I hope you give it a try. I just really hope you do it intelligently.
Good luck,

My car on the track running triple digit speeds for 20 to 30 minutes can consume a tank of gas in two sessions. That is approximately a 3 mile course with lots of corners that slow me down. You would HAVE TO increase cooling and fuel capacity. No way around it, otherwise you just an uninformed dweeb putting peoples lives at risk, with a poor understanding of the whole situation.

Be cool to try but I dont think any of the math works, as others have mentioned. The old days are just that....technology now rules the game and you cant beat it. I do think there are places to drive fast but those are places in nevada, the dakotas, maybe New Mexico but dam remote places. Once you get near the east coast your screwed. Maybe start in the east coast at midnight but still you cant get west in time to avoid traffic...

Take a look at a night time sat photo of the USA, you’ll see that there is tons of light up to about KC...then you can run.

Not really sure how those guys did it.

I did a run years ago in a 2001 Mustang Mach 1 - RI to CO started Friday at 9AM pulled in at Midnight Saturday - 4 hours sleep. It was a fast run and lots of close calls....wouldn’t try it again....it was also kinda stupid.

Someone on here said on here said something about the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea memorial run. I have been kicking the idea around for several months of attempting to break the record. As in the post of Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea memorial run I have a different take on it. I want to break the record with out to much of the extra technology.

Car, Driver, and radar detector. No extra fuel cells, no excessive technology. That would be my goal and hopefully I could do it and set a new standard for the record. I know it will take lots of luck, money, and risks but I believe doing it like this would be worth the reward as well as worth knowing that any attempt made after this wouldn't stand out as much do to the added tech and modifications. Modifying the vehicle I would do a lot of go fast parts (you know because I got to move fast as hell)

I did think of incorporating a few ideas to set myself from the rest. A 24 hour live feed or attempt at a live feed for the run. (signal strength and coverage might make some spots unavailable). I was planning on doing this run in the summer time when I hopefully could avoid storms. I planned on reaching out on social media via forms, Facebook, and networking to get a good support system for the run. I.E. scouts through various regions of the country. If you participate I will make sure to recognize you in any appearance or stories made. I will definitely keep this post updated if I do end up having the opportunity to do it. I am wanting to see if I can get this to take off.

If any companies out there want to contribute, any members want to contribute please message me. I would definitely appreciate it. If you think it could or couldn't be done I would love to hear the ideas and opinions. I want to see a mustang in the record books and make it the undisputed best and give it the reputation as the fastest car across country.

Do it and post your time. Then people will try to beat it.

Trying to establish a new format without having a time, means nothing. Don't try, just do it and let your new record stand.

I'm surprised this is even a thing anymore. With all the tech the authorities and other drivers have now plus all the distracted, clueless drivers out there, plus more traffic in general. Honestly, why chance it? I love to go fast, but there are safer ways to do it and I don't care where or how fast you are driving, 27ish hours straight in a car isn't fun.

why not just buy a plane ticket? safer, probably not much more expensive and you'd get there in like an hour and a half.

Back in 2006, I drove from Kansas City, MO to Texas Children's hospital in Houston, TX in right at 9 hours. That's right at 800 miles. This included 2 gas stops and a 20 minute detour/stop to wash the blood off my windshield from taking out a bird with the hood scoop at about 120 mph. On the last leg from Dallas to the hospital (about 240 miles), I don't think I ever drove below 100 mph and made it in about 2 hours and 15 minutes. This was in a full bolt on and cammed 2005 GTO.

It was probably the most reckless thing I've ever done in my life, but I was trying to get there before my 14 year old daughter went into double lung transplant surgery not knowing if I would ever see her again.

This is not even close to what you are proposing, and at least there was a meaning for my stupidity. Please don't try something so meaningless like this on the public highways where innocent lives are at risk. It's just not worth the risk.

Funny thing about this story, on my trip back to KC several weeks later, I got pulled over on I-45 on the south side of Dallas for 76 mph in a 55 mph zone. I had missed the speed change from 65 to 55 a couple miles back.

The officer was very polite and asked me if I knew how fast I was going. I told him I had my cruise set on 74 which I thought was 9 over the limit. He informed me the limit had dropped to 55 a couple miles back, but he appreciated my honesty. He asked me about my car and where I was heading. I told him the whole story about my daughter's surgery (of course leaving out the part of the 9 hour trip down). He told me to slow it down a little and only gave me a warning. I think that was one of the few times I haven't ended up with a ticket. My guardian angel was definitely with me on that trip.

That was first on my list, but the logistics just didn't work. It wasn't something that could be planned in advance since you don't have any idea when you'll get the call. By the time you get to the airport, get through security, board, deplane, get a rental car, and drive to the hospital you are looking at least 3-4 hours minimum. Nonstops between KC and Houston are a little over two hours. Multistops are out of the question. Now you're down to a 3-4 hour window to hope for a nonstop. Like I said, logistics just weren't on my side. I was figuring 10 hours max driving.

You probably didn't watched the european run between the Mustang GT and 116d BMW but let me tell you the Mustang is not fuel efficient enough to do this. Also the last Cannonball Record run of 27:25:00 was done with only 4 stops for fuel on a 45 gallon fuel cell + 20 gallon tank of gas. The Mustang has 16 gallon tank and gas millage of a bulldozer so what you are planning to do is not only stupid it just can't be done with a Mustang. Though a New York to LA vacation with a car could be epic a Cannonball Run is not great idea at all. As some others said if you want to go fast there is plenty of road courses in America and the Mustang is insanely fun around a race track so go do that.

Holy heck man that is quite a story I hope all worked out okay after that ordeal. But that was completely justified by you to do that speed laws be damned! To the OP this sounds crazy to me and could end badly in many possible ways.
Agreed. Hell, Under those circumstances I would have asked for a police escort. More importantly, SB, how is you daughter today?

well scratch the Live feed Idea. I did the math though. If I could get 16 MPG and do 5 minute gas station stops That's 10 stops running the tank down to empty. If I can keep an average speed at 112.44 MPH I could run the trip in 25 hrs and 50 minutes call it 26:30 to give myself a cushion. under perfect conditions.
So....you have now written on the Internet (which is FOREVER) that you intend to commit multiple felonies in multiple states. If you get caught, you have essentially just admitted guilt. If you seriously injure, or kill, anyone else on the road, you will be locked up for close to FOREVER. And every asset you currently own, and every dollar you may be able to earn in the future, will belong to someone else.

My advice? Buy a video game.
