Ordered a 2020 gt (base model/magnetic/6spd/edlebrock2650) little over a month ago, hoping to have her built and delivered by late December, early January. What are your thoughts on staying with the 3.55's already in there vs going to 3.73's? For 15-17 6spd gt's, 3.31 gearing seemed to be ideal boosted. With the new gearing on these gen 3 mt82-D4 transmissions, I'm not sure what gears to go with.

The MT82D4 paired with a 3.55 rear end has an almost identical first gear final drive ratio as the MT82 with a 3.15 rear end. It will help control wheelspin in first gear and you will get good speed in fourth gear if 1/4 mile is what you are going for.

Will be taking it to the strip 1-2 times a month and always up for some roll racing when the chance comes. Would be the daily pretty much outside of high summer temps

The lower the gears the better, what's great about the TVS blowers is that you have torque through the whole rpm band, I'd highly recommend going with the stage 2 and running. At least 93 octane.

Right on, I'm just going to stay with the 3.55's. Everyone is all about the 10r80 when it comes to the gen 3's, can't blame them the way shift forks have been breaking. Not much real world info to go on besides the complaints. I'm in CA so it's 91 octane until I get a fuel system. Got a stage 1 kit, I'll upgrade the throttle body and intake after I know everything is good with the engine. Didn't have the best of luck with my 18 gt

Well I switched the order over to a whipple build. Can't get the car shipped over on a custom tune and I don't want to wait until possibly February for edlbrock to have calibrations for the 2020 mustangs ready. Wanted the edlebrock because it's not as common as a whipple yet, but other than that it was a toss up between the two for me. Choice was do I want that whine or do I want to be a bit different... all smiles either way

I feel your pain waiting on the Edelbrock tune. I already purchased a Stage 2 kit and offered my 2020 up to Edelbrock to use as their test mule. Hoping to get it done soon.

I would've waited for edlebrock, but all I have for transportation is the motorcycle right now (2018 gsxr 750). Not all that fun during the winter months even in CA . Congrats on the purchase

Yeah I'm just staying with the 3.55's and seeing how things go. I think 355's would be a better fit for the edlebrock with its instant tq and 3.73's for the whipple since it gets into power slightly later. I don't know

I have a 2018 roush car with a MT82D4.
One thing to mention is what will your expected horse power be. When I tuned my car to the 650 to 680 whp, I knew that I would trap around 130mph. With 3.55 gears and the stock Michelin 275/40/19 (which is a 28 inch tall tire) I was only at about 5600 to 5800 through the traps at 124 to 126 mph.

When I went to a drag radial, I opted for a M/T 26 inch or 275/40/17. This lowered the gearing some. I still didn’t think it was enough. I did the gear change to 3.73. I believe this did little to nothing to improve things. I didn’t have real good data to tell me the improvements. A lot of how I was driving and shifting was heavily affecting my mph. However when I finally trapped at 133mph I’m right at 6400 rpm. This is pretty
much where I wanted to be. You can use an online gear ratio vs quarter mile calculator to help with this.

If I tune the car for more power I’ll have to move up to a 28 inch tall tire or I’ll start to run out of gear. So in my opinion experimenting with tire sizes is cheaper than paying someone to change the gears unless you can do the work yourself.

I had 3.73s in my 18 mt82D4 car with the Whipple Stage 2 kit on it. Was super fun, and I didn't even think about changing the rear gears out. You'll do fine with the 3.55s.

So would edelbrock be the better choice for the Mt82 d4 with 3.55 gears

I would take a whipple over a edelbrock but maybe that’s just me. I would not be thinking about gears right now. There’s a lot of more important upgrades you can do to get more gains than gears
