Just an FYI:

When referencing the issue with your local Ford Dealers, you do not need to give your VIN number. All you need to do is print or reference the attached Ford SSM. It is SSM46995 and is applicable to 2015-2017 Mustang convertibles. Even if your build date falls beyond the date in the SSM and you are experiencing wear or damage issues as outlined, for Customer Loyalty, your Dealership should still help you out based on the SSM.

Your Dealership should NOT give you any push back if you are the original vehicle owner and your warranty is still within the 3/36 (OR you have an extended ESP or other type of warranty).

RESULT!!!

Since having mine done (in the UK) I’ve checked every vert I’ve seen and I’ve yet to find one without any damage on it. The convertibles are rarer over here, so I’ve only seen a handful, but it’s good Ford are starting to feel some pain on this! Thank you for posting.

Just came across this thread, and I am having the same exact issue. Wondering if folks had more recent success taking it in for repair?

So just to recap, the dealership would replace the cloth with new cloth, and replace the tonneau covers? Also, any fear of further damage, if left as is?

I think it’s different in the US, Ford seem to care more about their customers and I’ve heard they have a policy of outsourcing to a convertible roof specialist rather than letting the dealer monkeys at it.

You should get a whole new roof, the fabric and mechanism are part of the same assembly. The new caps are a revised design but honestly I’ve not had the courage to fit them and drive off, I don’t wan to go through that again. However, I would advise trial fitting them after the new roof is fitted so you’re certain the new roof is fitted correctly.

so, just to double check since I just got my 2019 Convertible, this "recall" doesn't apply to mine since the current toneau caps already have foam to prevent from hurting the roof, correct?

For what it is worth when I bought my 2016 this spring the caps were missing. The dealer ordered me a replacement set and they do have the foam like the one pictured.

Yes but use at your own risk.

Mine is a 2017 that was built in Dec of 16 and it qualifies for this issue. I first noticed the tears in the summer of 17 but didn't know what the cause was. I found this thread about a year ago and now I know what caused it. Back in July I started working with the dealer to get mine set up for replacement. Here in the Cleveland area the local dealers farm it out to a specialist. The parts came in last week and my appointment is for Monday the 18th when they come pick it up and take it to their shop. So today I took it in and dropped it off at the dealer. I will post pics when I get it back, they told me it should take a few weeks. I'm in no hurry, it's the off season now.

I think you have nothing extra to worry about, by that I mean it’s just the normal risks of having work done to the car. I had a dealer with no convertible roof experience take four attempts at doing mine because Ford UK won’t outsource to a specialist.

Really keen to see how you get on with it.

Got my car back today, took them almost a month as I dropped it off on Nov 14 and they started on the 18th. Just for those who are thinking about getting this done while you still have warranty, do it before it runs out and the cost will be on you, the price for parts was $6,700 and the shop charged $900 in labor.

Did a quick once over at the dealer when I picked it up and overall it looked good and fit nice and tight with no wrinkles. It was dark out when I got it but I wanted to get it home before the snow flies, we are supposed to get 3-5 inches tomorrow. Maybe later in the week, if I get home early enough I'll get some pics.

Our Mustang didn't come with the caps, so I ordered them off eBay. I bet what I ordered is one of the older sets. I will modify them before putting them on the car. A little dremel work and padding should get it done.

I had the old caps on my '16 and, obviously, have the new ones on my '20.

I didn't use the caps often - maybe on a long drive, and usually at a meet or show.

You know what? With the additional foam the caps don't lay as flat or look as good. And yesterday morning one popped half out of position while I was driving (granting the possibility that I misinstalled it).

So...I thought about maybe trimming the new foam piece down a little but that's borrowing trouble. But it's just a minor appearance accessory...and therefore if it doesn't look good I'm not so inclined to use it, at all.

I should probably just take my meds and shut up. :cwl:

It's a shame that Ford did not engineer the top to drop and cover those exposed linkage areas. The last thing you want to do is get all kinds of leaves, debis, crap down in there. It should have been a seamless covering vs mechanical covers. It's a pain when you are out and it starts to rain, you have to stop, take the covers off to put the top up. I guess for car shows you would want them on, but otherwise they are more trouble that they are worth. The covers fit well on my 2017 Calif Special Vert and I guess I never considered any wear to the top materials as it did have a layer of foam on them already.

Yeah, I never noticed wear on my '16 but as I said I didn't use them often and only owned the car for less than two years. It was used when I bought it, though, with 42,000 miles on it.
