All, my 2013 Explorer 3.5 V6 just lost its water pump at 102,000. It turns out it’s internal, driven by timing chain. If the inner seal breaks its $2300 to replace. Add on some timing chain related parts because you already have the engine torn down and my bill is $3000. If you fail to see the minor leakage out the bottom of the engine weep hole, and the outer seal fails, you will instantly flood your oil pan and pathways with antifreeze and then it’s $8500 for a new engine.... you literally strip the dang thing down to block and heads to get to the water pump! 13 hours labor, $160 for the actual water pump!

I've got a regular cab 2016 f150 with the 3.5 in it. It's at 42k miles now, if/when that ever hapoens, I'm just dropping a 5.0 in it. I've got no plans to drop that sort of coin on this motor. Sucks to hear about your luck though.

I recently saw a thing on YouTube where a guy from a Ford dealership was asking all the mechanics what engine they would take in an F150. Every single one of them said 5.0.

Despite having and loving the 5.0 in my new F150, I'd take a lot of dealer techs' wealth of knowledge with a grain of salt.....

I can't imagine why anyone would design an engine with a timing chain driven water pump. It's not like accessory belt driven pumps haven't been well proven. Dumb.

If that's a Ford dealer price take it to a after market shop. it will be a lot less. I've worked for both and independent shop is the way to go and you DO not need to replace the engine with a milkshake about 90%of the time it can be saved, Just check your oil more often If you have a one of these Stupid internal water pump engines, there is a lot more of these engines made other than Ford,
