An E92 335xi was my first car. Awesome car to have but headaches when it came to cost of ownership at that time. I was young and worked my ass off to have that thing. Taught me a lesson about what BMW stood for, "breaking my wallet". Ever since then I've wanted to jump into an M3 or M4, but if I did I'd have to lease. No way would I own one again.
Yes they are quite temperamental when it comes to ownership... but class leading cars when working well. I bought mine not running for 2.5k off the KBB price, and fixed it myself. The parts I changed is one page long, but it basically rips now... snow, rain or dry.
The thing with German cars is; I would not hesitate to get one with 100k miles if all checks. But I would NEVER ever get an American car with 100k miles, just not going to happen.

My daily driver is 2017 Shelby GT350.

I have 49,500 miles on it. I drive it in hot, cold, rain, snow and ice.

I maintain a separate set of wheels with snow tires. I have now demonstrated to numerous armchair theorists in real life who dont understand the law of physics that a manual transmission rear wheel drive car with snow tires is better than pretty much any automatic all wheel drive car on market today with all season tires. When it snows, I go out just for fun and find people staring at me hoping I will embarrass myself just for them to embarrass themselves (cannot tell you how many times this has happened).

Every fall I treat the entire undercarriage of my car with fluid film. Every 2-3 months in winter I put my car on jack stands and wash the undercarriage. I have 0 spec of rust anywhere on the frame (although the strut towers do have rust).

My car has ford performance exhaust, MGW shifter, CF driveshaft from QA1, and signature wheels.

In almost 50,000 miles, it has been to the dealer only 3 times. A/C broke at 8500 miles, differential pinion seal had to be replaced in 35,000 miles, and front control arm at 45,000 miles. Besides that 0 issues.

I change my oil every 4,000 miles and do blackstone oil reports. I also do all other scheduled maintenance as per manual such as cabin and engine air filter, fuel filter.

When I say my daily driver, I should say “our” daily driver because my wife drives the car (since day 1) more than me. When I see other people driving minivans and SUVs, I feel so sad about them. I could never be one of those normal suburb dads (no offense guys).

I press that start button every morning at 7am and hear her roar. My wife rows those gears every day to/from school, to grocery store, to my kid’s activities. Does not bother her car has MGW. She probably annoys all other soccer moms in their big ass Q7s and navigators but she doesnt care. I love her and appreciate her support. I should also mention when I met my wife long time ago, she was the one who taught me how to properly modulate the clutch. Yes she is cool like that.

Oh and because I am into these mean/raw/monsterous cars so much I just got a 2017 C7 ZR1. It has Akrapovic evo and MGW. Imagine GT350 and ZR1 cruising the streets of a quiet american neighborhood. Sometimes we go on these drives just for fun.
Greatest American love story I've ever read. Props to you for driving it in all weather too, I personally wouldn't because that's what I use my Jeep for. Even without the Jeep, I'd have to get into something sporty/fun and I'd drive that in all weather. I'm totally with you on not being able to drive something boring.

I'm inclined to agree, but I started to really dislike that car towards the end of my ownership with it. Things like walnut shell blasting (never heard of that until owning a BMW), the wastegate rattle from the faulty turbos on the N54, the water pump going at 60,000 miles (and costing $800 just for the water pump bc it was an electric one, as well as a $100 thermostat) all drove me nuts

Yes, definitely. If you don't DYI on these, they are a money pit; they will put you off BMW forever. But so are other brands like VW, Porsche, etc. They all have an Achiles heel... But you are right, this specific BMW series seems to have more than one :)

Definitely true, killer if you don't DIY. But there is a difference between "reliable" and "durable." Most BMWs aren't the most reliable, or rather they need a lot of preventive maintenance to stay reliable, but they are durable. I've had multiple BMWs with well over 200k miles, and one (an E34 wagon with a 3.5L and manual trans swap) had over 350k on the drivetrain when I sold it, and I drove 1,000 miles it from Chicago to Denver to deliver to the new owner. Still going strong to my knowledge.

The later cars are definitely more fragile.

When I bought my E39 M5, it had already had a motor rebuild at 75k miles and the last owner had sunk north of $20k into it. I bought it for less than that amount and immediately dropped another $3500 on it, but I did most of the work: all new suspension, brakes, then the ABS pump died (got a used one for $400), addressed a battery cable that was shorting out on the subframe, etc. When you get on it and let the S62 open up, it's easy to forget it's an 18-year-old car!

ZR1 didn't come out until 2019?

Definitely a trend with the Raptor as a daily. I can't say I blame those of you who made that choice, it's a badass truck
I wish the Raptor wasn’t quite so “wobbly” on uneven roads and bumps and around corners (ya mine is a street queen, sadly don’t have off road oops that conveniently located). And if could have much better braking (yes even for a truck), but otherwise it’s stunning and I love mine!

My truck starter died, already had an appointment to have lower ball joints and rotors done. All will be fixed next week. My friend knows I don’t drive my cars in the rain. He has two Mercedes.
He said “Take the black one until you get your truck back it sits outside under a tree anyway, doesn’t matter if it gets wet!” So I detailed it (can’t drive a dirty car). By the time I give give back to him the car will be REALLY CLEAN!
