Finally got around to pulling the trans, here is what I found.

Exedy Hyper Single

Is that a piece of the spring?

Yes one of the inner springs broke, the piece got out and lodged in the clutch disk.

Did you have any weird clutch pedal vibes during disengagement or bite point?

Not that I noticed, but the bite point had changed, it was right off the floor instead of in the middle of pedal travel.

Is the Exedy a low quality part? This failure mode is unusual. Did you contact Exedy about this? What did they say?

I think that's the stock clutch. He was planning on getting the Exedy as a replacement I believe.

I posted all of this to my build page but this is what I found...replaced with an Exedy Hyper Single...all is well now.
