So I had a 2019 GT convertible rental for four days in upper Minnesota. I have a 2018 GT350, so how do they compare? Well I do like to push cars and see how they do..not just in a straight line....but in turn and braking. When I got the car in Duluth I dropped the top, turned on the seat heater and the vent heat too. I set it to Sport + for engine and suspension and the steering to sport. I set the transmission to S, and did my own shifts...
It was a fun car and felt great with the top down going up RT61 along the shore (temp was 64 degrees). There are small towns on that road and cops do catch speeders, so I kept it at 70 or under. When I turned onto RT1 North, the fun began.....its a twisty and undulating road with good pavement and little or no traffic and no cops to be seen. I mostly left it in 3rd or 4th gear and just rolled on and off the throttle for the 60 or so miles to Ely. So where does it not match the 350?, in the turns and braking.....and not as much oomph and the voodoo engine. In turns where the 350 would carve away with no problems, I could feel the GT push the outer front wheel and the chassis would say no more. The brakes began to fade and lose bite too and overall stopping power was not as nearly as much. Tires do play a part in all of this. The transmission was ok in S mode, once I got used to it, but I still like a manual. Of course Hertz does not offer that up. No rental car companies do.
So it was a fun few days having fun in a convertible in the North Woods and worth the money. I'd love to see a convertible GT350 though......that would be awesome. It had full leather, and its puzzling why Ford does not offer that option on the 350. I really liked the leather dash. Plus to change it out on the 350, its a whole new dash and frame. Pricey and lots of labor to do, so I wont.
