On my '18GT with A10 and optional 3.55 gears, my fuel economy cruising at 80-85 MPH isn't very good. Basically around 21-22 MPG. At 65 MPH it's more like 25-26 MPG.

These figures are after I adjusted the AFE Bias on the overly-optimistic trip computer, which will tend to give readings 1-2 mpg higher than reality from the factory.

My 6.2l V8 vette got better highway mileage (32 mpg atleast) at 75 mph than my wifes 2.0T Lexus did in same conditions. 1500 cruising rpms vs 2500 cruising rpms makes a big difference. So this proves the better family car is a big V8, lol.

Ok, hope this answers the actual question :like: I have a 16 V6 with the optional 3.55 rear end. Round trip from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City (500+ mi each way) I average 26.4-26.7 at 80-85 mph- it's 70 posted just out of town, 80 posted in Utah. About the same mpg LV to LA. Both are through mountains, and I stay on it. This is average for the whole trip. On the flats, the computer gives me segments close to 30+ . Around town, mileage is, well, not so great, but my driving is bad for it- short 3-4 mile trips, 110 heat, etc.

So, find one you like, if mileage is aissue, try for the 3.15. If it's a V6 you decide on, 3.55s were only available on 051a (They'll have 18s, fogs, 6 way drivers seat)
Now for minutia. There are obviously many differences between a V6 and a V8. According to Car and Driver, stock V6s are 5.5 sec 0-60. 0-100 is 13.4 sec, and the quarter mile is 14.1sec @102 mph . 30-50mph is 3.3 sec, 50-70 is 3.9. These are fairly respectable (and fun) numbers. You will be able to pass other cars quite nicely. Obviously the GT is faster, but that doesn't make V6 slow. The GT 350s are faster than the GT, GT 500 faster yet, GT40, well you get it . None of them are "slow".

They are both limited slip diffs, and stock/base are both 3.15 rears- better mileage. Optional is a 3.55, (GTs have more choices) V6 interiors are not stripped down, they are about the same as the base GT with a couple exceptions. Good luck, and enjoy! HTH

So you're wanting to convince your wife to replace an outlander with a Mustang as a traveling vehicle. If she falls for this let me know. I want to marry her sister.

A wise man would be looking at something like an Explorer ST with 400 HP through a ecoboost 3.0L and a 10R80 trans and AWD. Could be a fun little ride. A retune and it becomes a fun family truckster. At least the Explorer somewhat represents the Outlander in practicality as a travel vehicle...but with some zip.

I got a '16 GT Auto that can do 27 mpg at 80mph no problem. It does have bigger wheels and a tune though which may negatively affect it a bit. Realistically, I'm not getting those figures ever unless I try to do it by babying the pedals. Though with cruise control and a long straight strip it'll do it no problem.

Also, unless you like the V6 (15-17 USED only) sound over the 4 cylinder, I'd recommend getting the 4 cylinder if the V8 is out of the question. More power out of the box, good tuning potential, and u can get the recent 18-19 refresh AND better gas mileage! it'll do 32+ mpg no problem highway.

When my 2015 was stock (base, 6MT, 3.31, OEM tires) I would see 27-29 mpg regularly on the highway on long trips. This was usually at 75 mph.

Thanks so far guys. It's just the 2 of us for a few years at least, so no need for it to be a family car. Again, she's on-board already - but if it can't get 25-30 MPG on our trips I will need to go another route.

I'm aware that the V6/V8 choice has me limited to a 2015-2017. Also I'm assuming stock everything here, and not the lower gearing option in the read end.

I think in a year and a half we've put 8,000 miles on the Outback, so 2-3 MPG difference between the V6 and V8 at highway speeds would be worth the extra power to me.
Let me show you some math:
8000 miles at 25 mpg = 320 gallons of gas. Assuming $3.50 per gallon = $1,120 in gas.
8000 miles at 30 mpg = 267 gallons. Assuming the same price = $935 in gas.
Difference = $185.

You're talking about $185 more in gas over 18 months for those road trips. If that is a deal breaker, you have much bigger problems my man. Get the V8. Get a 2018 A10 GT. The '18 A10 GT with PP1 is a very fast mustang. They accelerate faster than a GT350 and GT350R. They accelerate faster than all previous GT500s except for the 13/14. They accelerate faster than the 2012 Camaro ZL1 with 580 hp. All this with "only" 460 hp. They are a beast, and get decent gas mileage on the hwy. For reference: with the cruise on and on a flat hwy my 2018 GT PP1 with the 10 speed auto: 65 mph = ~32 mpg; 70 mph = ~30-31 mpg. PP1 A10 cars have a 3.55 rear end w/ the performance package (compared to 3.15 with the base model). At 80 mph I'd estimate around 25-26 mpg is feasible.

I searched and search but can’t find it, I know when I got my car and it was stock on my trips to SoCal and back to Vegas I took a couple pictures... I got 23 going there and 29 coming back. It was during the “windy” season so heading into 20-40mph winds and then tailwind back. Usually I average 26-27mpg. Now that I have the bigger wheels and it’s not stock I’m happy if I get anything over 20. I’m about 11mpg in the city on e85 and 18 or so highway depending.. 91 I may get 24.. I put the stock wheels and tires on it helps.

How luck for you, I just drove my 2016 gt with 3.15 ratio 300 miles at 80-90.

I average about 26-28 doing 80 with cruise control on. But I do a lot of passing so the bursts of accelerating would bring me down a bit. You can assume 25mpg easy and if you're good then you'll get close to 28.

Someone above did the math and j gotta say that's how I feel. I mash the go fast pedal every chance I get. The gasoline smells fantastic and doesn't bother me to fill up
