I've watched countless YouTube videos and read many posts about "actual" MPG, but I've yet to get a concrete answer for MPG cruising at 80MPH for both the V6 and V8 S550.

We bought a 4 cylinder Outback last year and while its a great car otherwise, I honestly think it may be the slowest passenger vehicle on the road at any given time. Definitely the slowest car I've even owned.

This will be our road trip car - 95% of the mileage is driving from Tampa to the panhandle in FL - 450 miles at 80 MPH - hence my interest in the MPH at this speed. This is simply the speed everyone drives on I-75 - highway patrol is out for folks going 95, which we have a lot of.

Any feedback from you guys would be super welcomed - she finally realizes how badly I want this car, and I'm about to list the Subaru for sale. However if what I pick gets bad mileage at the aforementioned 80 MPH, I'll be in hot water.

Convincing your wife that a Mustang is a better "family car" than an Outback.. Completely different car. Good luck...….I would think at that speed you will get maybe 20 or slightly better...

I got 30mpg going a few hundred miles to St. Louis cruising at 75mph. I can do 28 easily within an hour drive on the highway. On my usual commute of 1/3 country, 2/3 city I get about 20-22mpg.

Don't buy any version of Mustang or other Pony car for the gas mileage. If mileage is really important buy a low cost new or barely used comfortable peppy economy car like a Honda Civic Coupe. :)

How many trips a year will you make and what is the $$$ difference per year between high 20's in the 6 or 4 vs low to maybe mid 20's in the V8 compared to the enjoyment factor of the V8? Be sure to compare using the same grade of gas.

You do realize that the V6 is no longer offered in S550 Mustangs, and hasn't been for a few years now, right?

There's too many other variables at play here for anyone to answer your question. You need to tell us exactly what you're considering purchasing, "V6 and V8" doesn't cut it.

Dude, It's "How Many SMILES Per Gallon" you get that counts!!!:sun:
I also drive on I-75, (Port Charlotte) but my car is still new, so can't help you out with MPG.
But yes, they are after those going 90+ MPH.

What's the cutoff for "bad" mileage? Rear end ratio will make a difference too, so you can't just compare power plants.

As a data point, my 350 gets roughly 20-21 at that speed. I can't see the V6/V8 getting much more than about 25. I've heard of the Ecoboost guys getting in the high 20s.

Thanks so far guys. It's just the 2 of us for a few years at least, so no need for it to be a family car. Again, she's on-board already - but if it can't get 25-30 MPG on our trips I will need to go another route.

I'm aware that the V6/V8 choice has me limited to a 2015-2017. Also I'm assuming stock everything here, and not the lower gearing option in the read end.

I think in a year and a half we've put 8,000 miles on the Outback, so 2-3 MPG difference between the V6 and V8 at highway speeds would be worth the extra power to me.
If what you want is MPGs, why not get a new A10 (10 speed auto) 2.3L Ecoboost mustang? It's faster than the V6, and gets better MPGs.

I can't imagine not getting 30+ MPGs at 80MPH with an A10/EB car.

The V8 gets good mileage at highway speeds. 6th is an overdrive gear, I typically get 25+mpg on road trips.
Thanks! How fast are you going there?

So 15-17 there’s a lot of factors to consider. Number 1 one would be gearing I have 3.55 gears and I haven’t really checked at 80 but at 70mph i get 22-25 maybe a bit less. Now I had a 14 with a v6 and 2.73 gear and at 70 I was getting low 30’s best I ever did in that was 33-34.

Now an 18 and up should get better gas mileage in the V8.

I should mention though that 15-17 V6 cars don’t have the premium package so it’s all going to be cloth and the small radio screen you don’t really get any options just a base car.

If it were me I would go for the premium package with a lot of highway driving since you get cooled/heated leather seats, and can get other options like adaptive cruise control, blindspot monitoring, better radio system, etc.

So took a 1600 mile road trip for Fathers Day from SC to NJ & NY. Secondary roads to 95 and local roads in and around my kids houses. Ran 70 to 80 on 95. Overall MPG was between 25/26. Car is a 19 GT 10R80 with 3.15 gears. Made the same trip in my 15EB Premium and got 31/33 MPG. 93 octane for both. If you need 25-30 the GT will be a go put be real gentle with that right foot.

Here's my dash on my "break in" road trip. This was between El Paso and San Antonio where the speed limit is 80 MPG.
