I am new to the Bullitt. I have a 64 1/2 k code mustang. Had a 15 PP mustang with good mods i sold to buy my Bullitt. My 15 had short gears to shift a bit. Real fun...pretty fast.
Why does the Bullitt have such long gears? Not the best for 1/4 mi....but very nice to drive on twisties....Only need 2nd and 3rd gear. Ideas?

Probably folks donā€™t buy the Bullitt to quarter mile it. That is a lot of extra money when you could use the basic GT. Also the car is maybe designed for older folks who can identify with the original Bullitt movie. If this car had been specifically geared for the drag strip I probably would not have bought it. Personally I would have been happy with 3.55 gearing instead of the 3.73 so Iā€™m at the opposite end of the spectrum from you and perhaps from most others...

The Bullitt has the same gearing as all 18 and up 6-speed GT PP1 models, 3.73 rear end with the same transmission ratios, even the same diameter rear tires.

Hmmm....3.55 gears would have made in longer. Been thinking that with these gears....not 1/4 mi. But to drive hard at high speed. My favorite rd is a 2nd...3rd rd.

Lots of power on tap, wide powerband, plus a sky high redline make long gears a good choice. Youā€™ll get used to it.

My favorate twisty rd to drive on is salmon falls. Runs from folsom in ca to hwy 49. An amazing rd with curves. A favorate for sports cars....and sport bikes.
The bullitt runs in 2nd....3rd gear. Very different power band. My 15 stang was a 2..3...4 gear.short gears. That said...it had about 1000 rpm less usable power range. At 6500 rpm it was done....shift to another gear. Very different cars.

Iā€™m totally jealous of your 3.73s. Australia Bullitts have 3.55 gearing and itā€™s my only... slight annoyance of the car. 2nd gear pulls to 132kph (82mph) and 3rd goes about 200kph (125mph). Sadly I donā€™t get to hear the top end of the rev range that often. My 2016 GT auto ā€œonlyā€ did 165kph (102mph) in 3rd.

I suspect the OP is referring to transmission gearing not axle ratio gearing as I've ready the same comment from others including @Bullitt

I actually wish my first gear on my '16 was longer - I feel it's there to do burnouts only and sometimes actually start in second.

Common complaint on the 18+'s.

I drove a 2015 and the trans gearing makes a massive difference. I'm personally planning on moving to 4.09's when funding allows.

I love the close ratio box in my '16 with the 3.73 rear axle. So much to choose from. I can get 27mpg on the highway, and cut switchbacks all day long in the North GA mountains. :like:
