fat fab said they haven't broken a 3160 yet. i feel like they have the highest hp gt350s yet i'm not really sure if thats the case.
From what we have seen the 3160 is a stout trans, the gears are large and it should hold similar power to a t56. However when you make 1000+ hp the gearing sucks so you will need to either change to a very low rear gear or swap it. We swap them since the t56 Magnum has large aftermarket parts support.

I have a few 3160's with very low miles sitting around if anyone needs an extra ;)

Maybe HAHA.

I wouldn't be afraid to push one in the 800-1000 whp range what so ever. Swap the rear gear and hammer down!

Ok so looking at the flat plane engine, it seems like a twin scroll manifold setup could possibly be beneficial. Is anyone planning on developing something like this or since we already have a relatively broad power band on turbos it's just no necessary ( and the complexity of having 4 wastegates seems like it would be a little too much )

Would any of those spare 3160's have the internal pump? Potentially looking to swap a tech version (2016) to get transmission cooling....

Yes I have one with the internal pump!

We dont have any plans to test this, packaging that many wastegastes would be fun! They perform so well the way we set them up now I dont see a need honestly.

Out of curiousity, what's everyone doing for a tranny? Everyone going T56 Magnum XL or used TR6060? Or are most folks taking their chances on the 3160?

Figured the 3160 would be a goner on boost.. in which case I figured I'd see more about tranny swaps lol
I'm still on the factory 3160 w/ stock clutch and its holding fine. Upgraded clutch to come shortly, but other than that you shouldn't have issues.

I would love to see/hear a 2650 on a gt350. I’m really interested in the new vmp gen 3r compressor and the new throttle bodies.

I hope they make a Gt350 specific kit, but honestly... I still think I’d prefer turbos

Hi

I have a Whipple on my GT350. Just wondering what others are seeing for IAT's After the blower (IAT2)?

Thanks

Jack

Just be careful with pulleys (see above )

I had pulled down to a 3.5 pulley running Maximal-C16 equivalent or at minimum supreme (112 octane ) after deleting my cats
Multiple dyno pulls - see above - saw some knock with the whipple tune /guardian /adding 0.8 timing on the dyno but zero knock on the street with up to 1.6 added . I wondered if the less than I expected power could be clutch slipping .

Car was running strong and I was just going through the rest of my race gas before the planned switch to E85 /ID1300/triple pumps when I made a pull on the street . - I had been getting some high rpm hesitation /random misfire codes that went away when I switched plugs but then came back without codes -so was getting some logs
Got the hesitation again at about 6500 - when I slowed down car was making some tapping noises I swore were from the valve cover .

Shop pulled the covers and said they could not see anything amiss so they pulled the pan and saw 3 bent rods .

Long block has been shipped to Will@RPG(also whipple ) for breakdown and hopeful diagnosis of why rods bent .

Block may need to be sleeved if PTWA lining is damaged by pistons /altered geometry as can’t be re-homed.

If so then will also upgrade to diamond pistons /Manley GT 350 specific H beams (I may consider I beams) of course since rods are done .
I will also have him of course go through the top end - swap springs and anytime else he recommends

I have a “spare “ engine I was tempted to drop in while I wait but I will have to pay for labor so that would be “ double R&R “
I can put that money towards a mantic clutch .

I may send the “spare engine “ in later for him to go through since it’s never been run /upgrade rods .
Long block shipped off last Friday .
Keeping spare as is for now .

Thanks to Will @RPG Tunning (also whipple) who is getting close on my long block rebuild.

Block is getting Darton sleeves as the liner was worn below spec in cylinder with one bent rod .

He is not sure exactly what caused the rod to bent but piston was dragging in the bore .

There was also some evidence of head lift so this could have contributed . Will be upgrading to ARP head studs and upgrading to PAC valve springs . 2 valves were broken and need replaced and will have all new seals . I declined very reasonable offer to port heads as don’t consider this a max effort build .

I am starting to wonder now if the miss before the rod bent may have been due to bad 02 sensors (from running leaded race gas -)repeatedly causing my plugs to foul from being rich .

I will be strictly tuning E85 / triple pumps and Lund tune when car is back together.
Also decided to upgrade my clutch while the engine is out . I chose the SPEC twin disc due to all the horror stories I have heard about the MCLEOD .The Mantic is too much $$$.

Pics of bent rod below (on the left )
Not sure if I was just unlucky or may be operator error but anyone doing FI may want to consider upgrading the rods especially if motor happens to be out .
I am going to build a “spare “ short block using a new stock rotating assembly I bought but with upgraded rods . It would have been nice to be able to get one of the Gen 3 blocks but will probably settle for a Gen I block that can be had for much less .
I will keep the “spare” complete stock engine in case I ever want to go back NA but it may be even worth more when they stop making the GT350....and no more Voodoo motors .

Figure I will add my 2 cents. I went Procharger stage 2 tuner kit P1-X . ID1050x, dual VMP BAP. Other than that car is 100% stock, on 6 psi and custom tune courtesy of Tuned by Norm, I picked up exactly 200 hp. Made the car exactly what I wanted. This was done on a “Mustang Dyno” in south Louisiana summer day at about 96 degrees.
