IIRC something like $54 (state) + 11.50 (Travis Co), not including inspection.

Thank you. Some dude told me it was gonna cost me over $1k because Texas goes by vehicle value. I think thats only for residents bringing in cars purchased from other states right?

I already paid $2500 to California when i moved there for sales tax because my car was 6 months old, i aint paying that kind of money again.

Isn't that fee for a car thats brand new being brought into the state by a nonresident? Whats the criteria for that fee?
If you download the form on that page it says the following.

New Texas residents are subject to a $90 use tax on a vehicle brought into this state that was previously registered to the new resident in another state
or foreign country. This is in lieu of the 6.25 percent use tax imposed on a Texas resident.

So looks like it applies to your situation.

I am not sure but I think you are supposed to do it within the first 30 days of moving into Texas. So there might be a late penalty fee. I am not sure.... Also I dont think they verify this data... So if you say you were going back and forth and just recently moved in permanently you can avoid this fee.... And I dont think the fee would be too much either... Maybe like a 15 dlls fee??? Not sure... But just keep it in mind.

Got the car registered, was only $197.50. Did my inspection and registration all in the same day. I had an appointment at the DMV so I was in and out in under 10 minutes. Easiest time I've ever had at a DMV, ever.

And from now on, you can do it on-line.
If you are military (active or retired) and have at least a Meditorious Service Medal, its also free!
Each medal gets one free car. I had an MSM and Legion of Merit and have two free cars.

I'm still active but I dont have an MSM. However, i will definitely pass on this info to my dad and some other people who do. Thanks! What do you need if you're still active though?
The certificate from the medal is all you need. So when you get that MSM or higher, you can get a free registration.
