With an oil change replacing the filter and adding 8 quarts, the oil level does not come up to the top of the hashed area on the dipstick and is about 1/4" low. Should I add any to bring it to the top, or just leave and ensure that it stays in the hashed area during the oil run? So far the latter is what I have done, but a buddy thinks I should top it off.

Either way...

I personally keep mine topped off to the top of the hashed area, clearly you don't want it below that area and also you don't want to exceed that level.

I'd leave it where it's at.
To much oil isn't a good thing

When I change my oil, my car is on ramps so it is tilted and I really let it drain a long time, until basically nothing is coming out. After lowered and filled with 8, I have the same thing on my 16. I put in about 8 and 1/3 qts total to bring mine to the full mark. I dont think bringing the oil to the full mark is a bad thing. Ford must think its ok or they wouldnt have marked the dipstick that way. In my opinion.

Mine is the same as op describes. I can add an additional 12oz. to bring it to the top of the hash mark.

As long as between high and low, you are good to go.
