Like the title says! I'm shopping. Pretty much decided on the Springfield Saint, but trying to learn about the different barrel lengths in a pistol config. Can get a 7.5" or 10.3". Leaning towards the 10.3" since that's what comes on the Edge, and it's the nicer weapon. Thoughts?

I would recommend the 10” barrel. My ar pistol is 10.5” and it either throws a 3’ flame or spits out considerable uncombusted powder. 7.5” is even less efficient and probably borderline unbearable

The big problem with them is muzzle discharge, very loud and intense. I have been working on a 10" barreled 300blk for a while fit with a gemtech can, just need to get some sights for it. Seems to be a handy little package.

I was considering a 300 as well. Leaning towards 5.56 for the obvious reason; honest about my shooting, cheaper to shoot, etc. Knew about the discharge problems. Does the 300 alleviate any of that, or is it still an issue? No plans to go subsonic/suppressed.

The 300BO is much better with the discharge. IIRC, it only takes ~9” for complete combustion so it is a much better round for an ar pistol. I swapped from 300 to 223 bc if the round cost. I’m cheap, so $1/ round got old quick while loading 30 and 40 rd mags for range days.

If you plan on going with a silencer in the future, I would get the 7.5. I have a Spikes Tactical Pipe Hitters Uion AR Pistol. It has an 8.1" barrel. I absolutely love this thing. It's 5.56 nato. I'm not a fan of 300 Blk Out. Ammunition for 5.56 and .223 is cheaper. I usually buy ammo in bulk. I average $.27 a round for 5.56 Nato. (1,000 rds).

300 blk was designed for short barrel rifles and the Subsonic stuff is perfect for a silencer. Rounds are more expensive but they are coming down in price as more manufactures make the round. Currently the best plinking rounds are about 50 cents a pop... not as cheap as 5.56 but getting there.

I love my home built 300 blk.

If you aren't gonna suppress, no real reason to go 300blk, although there are some nice supersonic rounds out there for hunting. 30 caliber bullets just make a bigger hole.......

That's it right there....it makes a bigger hole. Its not a plinking gun but a home defense gun. 300 blk also is better in pistol form since that's what its made for. Regardless I enjoy it a lot more then 5.56 and there is no doubt the bad guys wont care for it at all :sunglasses:

Sometimes a bigger hole is all it takes to get the job done, still gotta get an optic for it. Thinking reflex sight.

More serious work gun. Aimpoint T4, Vickers sling, back up irons, flashlight, light as possible.

Just built my pistol on a Spikes stripped lower and PWS MK111 Mod2 upper. Don't have any photos yet and still haven't shot it. The upper came with PWS Trident muzzle device which is very similar to an A2 birdcage but I also have the PWS brake as well as a Troy Claymore to play with. I know the brake would be obnoxious on the short barrel and the Claymore would send more of the blast downrange so I'll play around with them to see what works best for me.

I wish I knew more about building my own. I'd have to start doing A LOT of homework to get to that point.

So you guys are running suppressed with 5.56? Thought you need a subsonic round for suppressed?

Suppressors don't care if the bullet is super or subsonic, only your ears. Supersonic through a suppressor will remain loud from the crack of the bullet but will be somewhat quieter at the shooter's ear. Subsonics obviously are quieter but will cause cycling problems if the system isn't tuned properly with an adjustable gas block and potentially heavier buffer.

Building AR's is easy. If you work on your own car or do anything really involving hand tools and patience then your set. Best way to start I think(what I did) go and buy yourself a complete upper in the caliber and style you want. Then get your lower(only part that needs the background check on btw), your parts kit(s) and any furniture you want if your upper doesn't come with it. You also don't need a lot of fancy tools. Good pin Punch set, small hammer and a block of wood. Lots of patience. Easy

EDIT: make sure you check your local laws as some places can be stricter then others obviously. AR15.com has a lot of information. Just avoid the political BS unless that's your thing.
