All new Z-Mount mirrorless cameras announced by Nikon today, the entry level Z6 and the flagship Z7.

Z6:
  • approx $2,000
  • 24.5mp
  • 273-Point on-sensor phase detect AF system
  • 5-axis 5-stop in body image stabilization
  • 12fps
  • 4K ultra-HD video; 8K time-lapse; 120/1080P slow motion
Z7:
  • approx $3,400
  • 45.7mp
  • 493-Point on-sensor phase detect AF system and up to 9 fps
  • Same video spec and IBIS as Z6

All new mount is larger with a shallower flange distance which should allow greater lens design freedom, future ultra fast aperture lenses possible including the planned 58mm f0.95 NOCT lens. In-house designed FTZ mount adapter allows the use of the classic F-Mount lens catalog.

One glaring issue many have noticed is both cameras rely on a single XQD card slot. Battery life has been quoted as 300-330 shots but that is likely way low and would be closer to about 1k shots per battery, still much less than a DSLR as you would expect.

It's been a few months now and the cameras are in the hands of actual photographers(Z7 launched September 30th, the Z6 will be available end of November) and it appears the firmware(version 1.0 now) still needs upgrading. Matt Granger did an extensive F-Mount adapted lens test and found that many did not work at all(mostly 3rd party like Tamron and Sigma) and those that did work were slower to focus than they were on a native F-Mount D850. Exceptions being the 105mm f1.4 and the 200 f2 which had flawless operation on the Z7.

I'm looking forward to renting the Z6 when it is available and the firmware has been updated a bit. Autofocus performance isn't the most important thing to me since I love using vintage manual focus lenses anyway, and the IBIS and focus peaking are very appealing features for that.

The technology they can pack in cameras now is crazy. But given my current camera is way above my capabilities, I dont foresee me buying a new one any time soon, if ever (unless this one gets broke.) But it is fun to see what the new ones can do now.

One of the initial complaints about the Z-Series was the very low CIPA battery rating of 330 shots. In a recent field test video Matt Granger was getting close to 2k shots in real world conditions. He also extensively tested weather sealing(a common complaint of Sony cameras) which it passed with flying colors.

I have been a canon fan my entire life but always kept an eye on Nikon! My current DSLR camera is 9 years old. Phones are so convenient that I just don’t use the DSLR much anymore.... sad reality

Put a nice lens on that old camera and I bet you would use it more often! Having a phone is no excuse to leave the camera at home.

Hahah yeah I know. My go to lenses are 50mm prime and 70-200L f/2.8 just so big and heavy
I love my 50's and my 70-200, but if you think that is heavy try being a wildlife photographer! This one was shot on a relatively small 300mm f4 but once you start getting into 400+mm super-tele's you'll start seeing the weight go up and up. (also that is a crushed instagram file, full res looks so much better!)

Very nice!
I had my eye on the 300L f/2.8 but at 5k I knew that hobby was getting too expensive.
I had a smugmug site for a while but lost interest.

300 f2.8 was on my list as well but I was looking at either vintage or 3rd party. Now I have both Tamron and Sigma and love them both. I've been tossing the idea of trading the 300 f4 for a 200-500 f5.6 Nikon that has been getting good reviews.

I've got a Nikon D5500. I bought a kit that came with 2 lenses and a whole bag of stuff to go with it (2 batteries and 2 memory cards most notably.) But at this point the only two lenses I take anywhere are two I bought after words. One is Nikkor 50mm prime f1.8, the other is a Sigma 18-250 f3.5-6.3 (it's the one that generally stays attached to the camera.)
But since my camera is not a "full size" frame, both of those are actually amplified a little which makes them shoot a little bigger than they really are. They arent high dollar in the grand scheme of things, but the Sigma was expensive enough when you already have one expensive hobby. ;)
I like taking pictures, but really dont know what I am doing. LOL

If you have any questions or would like help with any particular type of photography shoot me a message! Even if it is just setting up the camera(there's so many things it can do!) I'm happy to help.
