I was going to wait until 5-6k, but had my Amazon PUP staring at me in the garage. Broke down and changed it @ 3100. Lolz.

Original oil looked a light amber color. No shiny metal whatsoever by eye. Could have gone longer. But, been running corn mix and full e85 since 70 miles. :).

for a lot of short trips, I would change sooner, such as 50%, or even sooner.

It wasnt a smart ass replied dip shit. The ability of the oil to do its job lies within its chemical make up and not its fucking color.

Some additives cause the oil to darken quickly so yea its not the only indicator but to totaly disregard oil color and smell when checking oil is not a smart move.

First oil change at 3000 miles ish is about how I run my engines unless specified sooner by the manufacturer.

I'm in the same situation. Only have about 2500 miles but 90% are short trip in town miles.
Wife and I are taking a short road trip next weekend probably putting about 1000 miles on it.

I had planned on just going ahead and doing the first oil change before the trip.

To add even more drama, I would be taking advantage of the first oil change free offer at my Ford dealership!

I did my first change at 1200 miles. Ford says break-in is about 1000 miles. Break-in means the moving metal parts are wearing down to a good fit, and that means there must be more metallic particles in the oil. So after breaking in, I drained the oil and went to full synth.

How can you change your oil too soon? It can hurt anything. I’m changing mine when I hit 500 on my new 2018.
