Ford is replacing the transmission and torque converter. Car likely out of action for a month or more.

My 18 is the same way. Jerky from R to D, and downshifts extremely rough from 4 down. I tried the relearn with no joy and ended up taking it to the dealer. Tranny specialist said it was normal. Thinking about taking it back again.. Build date is around 11/17.
Had the transmission tech drive my car. During his test drive he was watching the readings from his tools that were plugged into the diagnostic port. Noticed the pressures were too high in the trans, which in turn was causing the transmission to jerk into D and down shift rough while coming to a stop. According to the service description, he “cleared adaptive trans tables and test drove to relearn”. Transmission feels like a new replacement. Completely smooth into D and while coming to a stop.

Can’t you accomplish the same thing by disconnecting the battery? How is what he did different?

NOTE: Perform the adaptive learning drive cycle on a level road surface.

NOTE: The engine and transmission must be at normal operating temperature with the transmission fluid at the correct level.
  1. Record then clear the DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
  1. Warm the engine and transmission to normal operating temperature.
  1. Accelerate from a stop with light throttle (15%) ensuring that the 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8 shifts occur at engine speeds between 1300-1600 rpm.
  1. Continue to accelerate (may apply slightly more throttle after 7-8 upshift at 32-38 mph (51-61 km/h) until you achieve 55 mph (88 km/h) and the 8-9 and 9-10 shifts complete.
  1. Brake very gently to a complete stop and hold foot on brake for five (5) seconds.
  1. Perform a Neutral to Reverse engagement.
  1. Repeat Steps 3 through 6 six additional times.

This is awfully involved. Most people don't live in a place where traffic and road conditions allow you to slooowwwly putt around at 1300-1600 rpm up through every gear until 55 mph. And then slooowly stop? Repeat 6 times? This procedure is not workable in the real world.

I wish they would drop this adaptive learning crap and just give us a fixed transmission tune, with a couple of settings for desired shift firmness.

Anybody with SCT BDX makes sure you are checking for device updates. I reloaded my tune and A10 runs great. No more hard/harsh downshifts in D. Fyi.

Hello, I only have 2500 miles on my 2018 GT. I usually keep my driving in sport mode and sometimes
I let the car shift normally in auto mode. For some reason, when in normal auto mode, when it downshifts
From 4th to 3rd it’s rather abrupt. The shifts are fine in the other modes. Has my transmission learned this? The downshifts were very smooth when new.
I have a 2018 GT and the same issue with firm downshifts to 3rd gear while in Normal driving mode.

The harder I brake, the harder the down shifts are. If just let off the gas and coast, the shifts are easy and smooth. If I mash the brakes, the shifts are quicker and a lot more aggressive. I notice no difference between any particular gears individually.
I have noticed the same thing. The drop down to 3rd gear is the hardest. Rather annoying in day to day commuting.

Like many that have posted in this thread, I was experiencing harsh downshifts with the A10 in normal mode (particularly the 4th to 3rd downshift). It was mostly 3rd gear that was hitting really hard but other gears were doing it on occassion as well. My car would surge forward when shifting from reverse to drive. Just regular braking felt really clunky as the trans would downshift when I was coming to a stop. Brought my car into the dealer and picked it back up after work. So far, all of the issues I had are gone. Stopping is now completely smooth and I can't tell that the transmission is doing anything when I'm slowing down in normal mode. Shifting from reverse to drive does not move the car at all. I haven't driven enough miles for the adaptive learning strategy to do it's thing but the improvement was immediate. I'll post the verbatim tech notes for anyone interested in what was done. I noticed that the invoice states the cause was adaptive learning values but the repair notes state that the transmission control module (TCM) was reprogrammed! This was at Palm Bay Ford.

****TECH NOTES****

Cause:
MT7Z369 RELEARN ADAPTIVE VALUES AND RELEARN ALL SHIFT STRATEGIES

Completed electronic trans diag and pid record monitor road test. found trans down shift to 3rd gear harsh and rev to drive engagement.
Found no TSBs or SSMs. No codes in vehicle for customer concern.
Cleared the adaptive strategy. Reprogrammed the tcm to latest update.
Performed shift strategy relearn road test. All trans operations normal at present time.
Relay to customer that this trans has an adaptive program that takes 50 to 80 miles to achieve the proper shifting performance.

Just curious, do you know about what date your car was built? Just wondering if this is a "recent" (just-issued) TCM update or an older one.

If you go to Ford ETIS and set up a user ID, once logged in you can plug your VIN. Once the VIN is plugged, it will list the entire build for your vehicle - including all module update dates and revision numbers. If there is an update that supersedes the original, it will be marked as such, so you’ll know if the module needs an update.
