Does the S550 (specifically '18 GT) have a coolant level sensor?

See thread title---is there supposed to be any dash warning for low coolant? Or do you just find out when it overheats? Thanks.

Will explain why I'm asking later...

On page 85 of your 2018 US Owners Manual; yes all S550’s have a coolant temp warning light, (see right side of attached page).

It will normally illuminate near the coolant temp gauge.

Thanks, but I was wondering if there was any kind of warning for low coolant level (regardless of temperature). As far as I can tell there isn't.

By extension, abnormal heat might mean low coolant. It would be among the first things to check.

Thanks for the confirmation. The reason I asked is that I've been noticing my coolant level has slowwwly but steadily dropped since I bought the car. I've "lost" about a quart of coolant over a 6 month period. That's only like 5 ounces a month, but even so I've never had a new or new-ish car lose it that fast. I'm used to maybe adding a pint a year. Does anyone else have to top off your coolant somewhat regularly?

The owners manual says something like if you lose more than a quart of coolant in a month, have the car serviced.. to me that seems like a very loose "standard" for cooling system leaks. A quart a month seems like pretty good sized leak.

Sometimes I think I can smell a whiff of coolant from the HVAC system on a warm start. If it's a heater core leak I'll be pissed. I can't find any dampness in the carpet tho.

That would be what the warranty is for...no need to get pissed off, life is too short for that.

You should not be losing coolant. Take it in to dealer. Especially if your smelling it.

Revisiting...

So I can see how there might be some confusion, as I saw another thread regarding the coolant temp icon. In my 2018, the coolant temp “icon” is permanent on the anaolog dash cluster and illuminates the color of the dash gauges. It’s presence is always there (strange).

I’m assuming that IF the coolant level gets low enough where engine/head temps get to an abnormal level, this same icon must illuminate another color to warn the driver???

Cooling systems shouldn't lose any coolant, ever. Not a drop.

Take it in for warranty repair.
