Just throwing this out there as an FYI if your turbo is ever R&R’d for repairs or upgraded turbo.

This is a recent SSM that applies to all 2010-2019 Ford turbocharged engines:

Isn't that just the engine oil filter?

No, it's not. It is a small filter in the turbo oil supply line.....
(It's a finger filter located in the engine block where the supply line attaches, not visible unless the line is removed)

So this would be similar to the sintered brass filters in some older carbs?

Why is it that this filter seems like such a bad idea to me? Is Ford saying that the OEM oil filters aren't good enough, so we are going to install a mesh screen that will eventually plug up and restrict the flow of oil to the turbo, but not make it a typical serviceable part? To me, the whole engine just needs better filtration if it's not good enough for the turbo itself.

The engine I pulled this out of was a 2015 with 61k on it and god knows what went thru it. Hole in #3 piston but filter wasnt clogged. It looks like its designed to drain back into the block when the car is shut off. I do agree though, its designed to protect the turbo but it seems the debris would have to get sucked up thru the oil pump prior to ever seeing this filter which is a little troubling.

I like it. I always had a pre filter on my big turbos. Especially on a fresh engine. An oil filter is designed to bypass oil over a certain pressure which is when the turbo filter can prevent losing a turbo. Cold startup oil pressure is one time when oil is not filtered because the pressure is usually too high.

No problem. Pulling one motor out, transferring everything over from it to the new motor and putting it back in is allowing me to take lots of pictures if anybody wants anything. Sometimes just a size reference is enough to make the location easier.

Looks very RTVish...
Do you mean as in RTV to seal it up? If so, you would have to see how it fits in the block. It goes into the hole where the turbo feed line connects. There is a small lip there that it sort of 'seats' into. No leaking issues that i can see. Only issues i can see are if you get a little over zealous trying to remove it, that you could push it right into the oil pan.:whew:
