I thought the next gen. Explorer was sharing an assembly line / "body" with the next gen. Mustang.

So that means next generation mustang COULD be AWD.

Also means next generation Mustang could use the larger wheelbase of the Explorer and use 4-doors as a sedan.

I'm picturing Ford is going to use this as their Police Interceptor series frames:

1. Mustang 2-door RWD
2. Mustang 2-door AWD

3. Mustang based 4-door - AWD or RWD cheap "Panamera competitor"

4. Mustang based 4-door AWD - Police car
5. Explorer based 4-door AWD - Police SUV

6. Explorer RWD
7. Explorer AWD

Ford has said the next Mustang will be on the new Explorer platform so what we will really have is a 2 door Explorer

OMG!! Please let it be a bad joke. Here in Europe we have many of that 4 door sportcars (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche). To me they all are crippled no goes for people with money but without taste. If Ford will make some money with this kind of car please don‘t call it Mustang. Edsel II may be a good choise.
I bought the Mustang because it still feels like the real thing.

A 4 door Mustang would sell like hotcakes!!! Obviously don't call it a Mustang, when Maverick or Falcon would be better names. Just think of it like a lighter and sleeker Charger. If its AWD AND V8 then I'd get one.

One thing if it's AWD...it ABSOLUTELY needs to be RWD biased. When there is no slip in the back, I want my back wheels pushing and my front wheels steering. Ford tried a vehicle with higher power than normal in a FWD biased AWD setup in the SHO and the torque steer when I put my foot in it during a test drive absolutely turned me off on the car. If I had not purchased my 550i in MY 2013 (ordered in summer 2012), and could have waited a year, I would have gone for the Chevy SS. If Ford puts out a Lincoln or a Ford with 400+ HP, RWD/AWD, and 4 doors, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I don't want a sports car - which the Mustang isn't anyway, it's a Pony Car - I want a cruiser. Little larger then the Mustang, comfortable on long (1000+ mile) trips and long commutes that I can take rain/show/shine every day. Something with comfort, class, and enough power to make me smile when I want to go from 0 or 10 mph to interstate speeds, and enough grip when I take the back roads to make me grin from ear to ear. And enough room in the back for two normal adults to sit in comfort.

It’s because those of us who are on these forums are car guys. We can’t help it. It’s in our DNA.

Ford unfortunately didn’t invest too much into making the Taurus show a better car/performer. Ford’s problem (and Chevy’s with the SS) is a lack of marketing and advertising. Show the car, advertise it, promote it. Make people want it. Every time I see a Dodge commercial all I see are SRT Chargers, Challengers, & R/T, SRT Durangos. Guess what? If I was in the market I might go for a Charger or Durango. Ads work. Promoting a product works. What Ford needs to do (& what Chevy failed to do with the SS) is promote the shit out of their products, especially hi-po products like a V8 sedan or even the Mustang. They can’t just rely on us car guys trading up to the next gen Mustang every few years, or into a Taurus SHO when our driving needs change. Promote your products and make the non enthusiasts WANT to buy that pony car or performance sedan.

AGREED! My dream cruiser would be a ‘64 TBird Convertible but since Ford gave up on the ‘Bird my EcoVert fills the bill. I suppose we’ll never see another Thunderbird but wow they were awesome!

Dear Ford, Don't screw this up.
It's honestly quite simple really. We don't need a shooting brake, we don't need a big dumb Kia Stinger GT hatchback type car or anything like that. We really don't need a twin turbo v8 either. What we need is a simple rear wheel drive platform sedan that's roughly the side of a Dodge Charger, throw a 480hp 5.0L with a 10-speed auto or 7-speed manual behind it. give a few Magnetic ride suspension options (GT performance Pack, GT Performance Pack Level-2, GT350) throw a few of the GT/GT350 parts at it, maybe an AWD setup option, give it a 12" mustang instrument cluster (1971 Torino inspired dash), a 12" infotainment system, sporty interior B&O stereo system, mustang inspired headlamps, front fascia and rear fascia, a full width tail lamp system (reminiscent of the 1970 Torino), trunk spoiler options that look like the GT performance pack spoiler and the 2019 GT350 spoiler, Brembo brakes, 19 & 20" wheel option (at least 15-different styles) a base 3.0L V6 twin turbo engine packing 400hp/400tq with the 10-speed auto behind it, FRPP options and upgrades (power packs, suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, full exhaust systems and shorty headers!!!) the exhaust manifolds need to be separate from the catalytic converters like the GT350 setup. etc. The car should be named probably be named the Ford Torino, seeing that the Torino was Ford's midsize performance car. Also since the Torino came in a Fastback body style, which looked similar to the Ford mustang back then, just larger, Ford could really play in to the mustang inspired theme with this car. Given the dimension of the car (slightly smaller and lighter than the Dodge Charger) the trunk should rival the Charger's current size or at least the Challenger and the interior should be a comfortable and spacious environment (black or black and red or black and brown combinations with either solid black, carbon fiber or wood trim) I would also say a 700hp version of the new supercharged 5.2L V8 should be added to the lineup as the Torino Cobra. If Ford were to design the car like this, everything would be okay. Ford would do good dropping out the Fiesta, the Focus, the Fusion, the Taurus, the Ecosport, the Escape, the Flex and the Edge and have the Mustang (drop the 2.3L Ecoboost and add the 400hp/400tq 3.0L V6 twin turbo as the base option, the GT is fine, throw in a 500hp/450tq street performance 5.2L N/A Mach 1 with a 10-speed auto option, do whatever with the GT350 and bring on the GT500), the Torino which should get that 5.2L N/A 500hp option i mentioned for the mach 1 as well thrown in somewhere, (the mustang inspired electric crossover), the Ford Bronco (should have the regular F150 400hp 5.0L V8 option), a Ford Explorer (should have a 480hp 5.0L V8 option w/ 10-speed auto, magnetic ride, Brembo brakes, active exhaust, aggressive styling, etc) the Ford Expedition (should have a V8 option) the Ford Ranger, the Ford F150 (raptor should go back to a V8, preferably a supercharged 540hp 5.0L V8 and their should be a Ford Lightning street truck with a 600hp supercharged 5.0L V8 and a Harley Davidson F150 luxury performance truck with a 540hp supercharged V8 and yes people would buy all three of them). Sure somewhere in all of this we could get a few more electric crossovers that fit in the range from small, medium and large since there are those people who want electric & hybrid cars or just have hybrid versions of all of the cars i mentioned above along with dedicated electric cars for those who are interested in that sort of thing. To me, this says "The thread was BS and we never even suggested anything remotely similar, but after seeing the way the car world blew up with excitement (as most enthusiasts embrace the idea... so long as it's not called a Mustang), we're considering a new option to keep the mustang line exciting"

I mean, that might just be my hopeful interpretation, but the fact that he didn't deny it, yet commented on it whereas just a week or so ago, they refused to acknowledge it... seems suspect to me
