Almost sounds like an old school Cummings. It does not bother me at all. Car runs strong and burns no oil after 7,4xx miles. Prettt much made the noise since day one.

I’ve read about the tick and figured I would see if this is what all the fuss is about.

No, that is a steady occurring tick which is probably related to the direct injection or valve train parts. I see you've taken that ugly engine cover off. A big reason it’s there is to dampen the direct injection noises that are new to the 18 & 19. The pre direct injection cars didn’t have such a big cover.

The “TICK” so many talk about is irregular and not rhythmic. Sort of sounds like the flame igniter on a BBQ. You’re engine sounds normal to me.

Thanks. Now I understand why it's called the BBQ tick.

Dr. Norts that is indeed the "real" tick. LOL.

FYI my understanding is that the direct injectors aren't used at idle or even low speed/load. However there are lots of other sources of that normal sounding tick.

No, that's not the BBQ tick.

Most likely just the valve train. Lots of rockers and valves to make noise.

Go to a higher viscosity oil and the valve train will quiet down.

I use 5w50 but I have a Whipple.

Maybe start with 5w30.

I was also wondering what the BBQ tick was. Mine makes that same valve train noise too. More pronounced when the engine is cold. I figured it was normal.
