Hi guys,
I haven't posted in a long time but read these forums daily. As oil changes go, I also found it difficult to remove the filter without making a mess. I picked up this funnel for my second oil change and it worked great. No Mess at all. You can even drop the old filter into it before lowering it down.
It's at Walmart for ARO $5.00. I hope this helps someone!

The funnel method works, but it's tough to get it up there because of the belly pan, at least on the PP cars. I don't know what the belly of the non-PP cars looks like.

Myself, I use an awl to punch a hole through the bottom corner of the filter, let the whole thing drain (I embiggen the hole with a bigger screwdriver), then use the screwdriver to turn the filter, since you can't really get a filter wrench up there. I typically need to make a second hole further along the bottom edge so that I can continue to turn the filter.

I use aluminum foil to shield the surrounding parts. Once it's done draining, i just remove it and throw it away. Easy enough!

I first loosen the filter so that I can rotate it with hands.

Then i wrap it with plastic bag with plastic bag goi g as high as posdible. Ziploc of appropriate size works best.

Then I just remove it with hands. Oil gets into a plastic bag.

But you have to wait for filter not to be too hot.

Happy to have the Auto Hobby shop at my disposal on base. Lift the car up and use one of these to drain oil and filter...
