Interesting article from Jalopnik. I have often wondered myself as I have hit empty once or twice.

http://lifehacker.com/how-far-you-can-drive-your-car-on-empty-in-one-chart-1786455985

The chart is for 2015 models. I know we have 16 gallon tanks so what I don't get is the estimated 38-80 mile range if it's 1/16 of a tank (1 gallon). I hope to never find out but does anyone have experience with this (esp. GT model)?

Lol.
My gas light turned on today says 50 miles left but my gauge still has quarter tank left.
I've been getting 17 MPG. A lot worse than my automatic which was 19 MPG.

Exactly the same for me. I've gotten down to 24 miles left but chickened out and hit a gas station. My BMW would countdown until 15 miles then it with give you a LOW reading which I assume meant I was going to die any minute.

Weird thing I remember my auto would go lower before the light turns on.
I guess its based on my MPG.
The auto loved lugging the 6th gear where the manual's 6th gear is too tall so I use 5th gear most of the time.

gas "light" don't matter. how you drive within the last say 50 miles does. based on something that i haven't yet looked into, your MTE is re-evaluated every so often. not sure if its every 25 miles, or every hash mark on your gas gauge, or whatever.

your MTE is generally the closest you're going to get as accurate when comparing to the gas "light". now if you have 30 miles left, and you decide to WOT every gear until you run out of gas, the MTE may miscalculate since it's re-evaluated every so often. again, not sure what that's based on.

i've had the gas "light" come on at 10 MTE, 19 MTE, 50 MTE, 75 MTE, etc...

once the light comes on though, my driving habits go into granny mode so i can get a realistic MTE. being stranded on the side of a highway isn't something i'm wanting to do

I've had my wife's explorer down to 9.

When I test drove the mustang the salesman started it and said "whoa. we need to get gas. This thing is on zero and these cars MEAN IT when they say zero. We've run out before"

I am used to my FJ's light.
When it turns on I have at least 3.5 gallons left. The needle is usually in the middle of the last quarter.
The Mustang turns on pretty early.

I wouldn't chance it until you find out how your individual car works.

I had an R53 Mini and the gas gauge was pretty dead on by what I could tell. Ran it down to E once or twice (clearing out crap gas) with no issues.

Traded it for an R56 Mini and the gas gauge was shit. The first digital "candy corn" on the gauge (which corresponds to 1/8 tank) wouldn't go out until you burned off five gallons... in a 13 gallon tank. I ran out of gas once with 1/8 tank indicated and 50 or so miles remaining to E on the car's computer. Luckily I was pretty close to home. Apparently, this is not at all uncommon with the R56.

I ran out of gas after driving for about 15 miles after the empty gas warning "lit". I had to walk 0.3 miles to the nearest gas station to buy a 2-gal gas container to fill it in. Luckily it was only 0.3 miles.

I've had my GT say I had 7-14 miles worth of gas left in the tank. Both times it was pretty darn accurate if our tanks take a true 16 gallons as i was able to fit 15+ gallons in it. Last time it took 15.3 gallons of gas.

I got down to 6 MPE once. I filled up 14.998 Gallons in my Ecoboost, which has a 15.5 Gallon tank if I'm right. At 21 MPG, that's 11 Miles to go.
