Here at Mishimoto headquarters we are working to expand our arsenal of Mustang parts. We are making significant progress on our oil cooler design, and an interesting design it is. We are aware that many Mustang GT owners are adding forced induction to their already powerful V8s. We are taking this into account by offering an oil cooler that would still leave room for some of the larger intercoolers required for aftermarket turbo and supercharger kits. This strategy created quite a challenge for our engineers. As always, they rose to the occasion and created a brand new and unique cooler design specifically for our beloved GT. Drumroll please!

Rather than designing a traditional bracket for this all-new oil cooler, our engineers went with an interesting design. Modeling the bracket after one of the plastic upper air diverters, the new bracket will replace the diverter as the bracket for the cooler. Because a picture really is worth a thousand words, check out some photos of the first oil cooler prototype.

As you can see in the photos above, we are working with possibly our most unique bracket design to date. This oil cooler bracket will take the place of one of the plastic air-diverter panels located underneath the radiator support. Here is a shot of the stock component.

Our lovely hand model and engineer held up the cooler portion of the prototype to show where our oil cooler will sit once finished. This is an all-new design for the heat exchanger as well. This heat-exchanger is nearly the length of the top grille section of our Mustang GT. A less-lengthy oil cooler is the traditional way to go, but we felt that this design optimizes the available space.

Coming Up!

Now that we are sure of the dimensions of the oil cooler bracket, we can get started creating something a bit more sturdy than cardboard! Check back for more details on the creation of the oil cooler bracket as well as more upcoming S550 Mustang parts!

Can't wait! Any word on a time frame before we are able to purchase them?

We do not have an accurate time frame at this point in development, we are researching several designs to decide how to move forward. More on this coming up!

Any chance this will work with the Procharger intercooler?

The Procharger intercooler seems pretty large but it looks like this oil cooler may potentially mount in front of it?

You are correct, we made sure to take popular intercoolers into consideration when designing our oil cooler so that they should fit together. However, we can not say for certain that our oil cooler will fit with the Procharger setup as we have not had a chance to test fit our final design on a GT with that setup.

Thank you for your response! Sounds promising. I will be ordering one when I get my car (and its released of course)

We're working on a cooler Coyote: Mishimoto's Mustang GT Oil Cooler R&D Part 2

Prototype Bracket

Last time, we looked at how we began our bracket design and also the location of the oil cooler. Our design has certainly progressed since then. After we were certain of the dimensions of the bracket, we ditched the cardboard for some steel. Using our waterjet the engineers cut out our first functional prototype bracket. The waterjet is one of our newest tools and has been making development a breeze, as it allows us to make much more precise prototypes compared to fabricating them by hand.

The bracket will be bent and the tabs in the center will fold together to better emulate the stock component. If you have noticed all of the small circles cut out of the front portion of the bracket, we plan to test the strength of the bracket with and without dimples to decide if they are necessary for added strength.

Once the bracket was bent to shape, the next task was to create the small dowels that stick out of these folded tabs. This was a job for the trusty lathe! Check out some shots of the lathe in action.

These tabs will be welded into place to secure them, much like the stock tabs. This functions to guide the air diverter into place on the GT. Check out some shots of the prototype bracket installed!

Heat Exhanger Prototype

After we had the bracket in its final position, we put together a prototype cooler for fitment purposes to ensure that it would be clear of all important Mustang parts. Here are some photos of our plans for the oil cooler’s general size and shape.

Coming Up!

Next up we will be testing various heat exchanger designs to determine which one will function best on the Mustang GT. Check back for more details and testing!

Thanks for reading

Are you going to be using the GT 350 Oil Filter/Supply and Return Adapter, or something else? My PP Filter Adapter has the standard integrated heat exchanger with Radiator Supply and Return lines instead of Oil lines.
