My car has turned in to a lemon.

--- I would love to hear what you guys think about these issues or if you have any guidance on where to go from here.

I purchased the car on 4/11/2015, so it hasn't yet been a year since I've owned it. It's been in the shop a total of 22 days so far in that 11 months of ownership -- and it will be going in again this Monday.

One of the issues has been constant -- a trim piece above the driver's side door continues to break off after putting the convertible top down. It's happened six times in total thus far. I haven't reported the most recent time because I want to see what I can do at this point. It's been an incredibly complex and frustrating experience.

The first time the trim piece broke off, I took my car into the dealer I purchased it from. They stated they ordered a new piece and replaced it.

The second time the piece broke off, I noticed that the headliner was wearing through and fraying badly as well as the back window being loose due to a broken brace. I took it in for service. They snapped the trim piece back into place and attempted to fix the rear window. They couldn't get the window secured and the back window brace broke twice while in the shop. They returned my car to me at that point to await Ford's response on how to fix the issue.

The piece snapped off a third time; they snapped it back into place, waiting for Ford to see how to address the rear window issue, hoping that once that was fixed, the issue with the trim piece above the driver's door snapping off would be resolved.

Ford eventually advised the dealer to order a new convertible top and replace the entire top to address all issues.

Ford subbed it out to a convertible specialist near where I live, and he then assured Ford that only the convertible headliner and trim piece would need replaced, in addition to installing the new window kit brace instead of replacing the entire top.

When my car was returned to me after that, I went to put the top down and it snapped off yet again. I reported it to the dealer and they advised me to stop in at the specialist for him to take a look at it. He snapped the piece back into place and told the dealer that trim piece and the piece that connects into would need replaced.

It broke off again -- I reported it to the dealer and they told me to stop in at the dealer so the specialist could take pictures. I stopped in the next day, they took pictures and ordered a new trim piece along with the piece that that connects into.

The new parts came in. I dropped my car off for service, the next day they told me my vehicle was finished and that they installed the new parts. When I went to pickup my car and opened the driver's door, the piece was hanging down yet AGAIN. I immediately went back inside, told the service adviser, and she got a technician who snapped it back into place. We tested it a few times and it seemed alright.

Now again this Friday the piece has snapped off yet ANOTHER time. This is now the 6th time this has happened.

Keep in mind this is only the reoccurring issue.

In this period of time, I've also had a plethora of problems, such as the glove box light not turning off, paint defects, the rear taillight rubbing off paint both on bumper and trunk, heated and cooled seat malfunctions, speakers making buzzing and (whomp) noises, loud intermittent squeaks near A-pillar, excessive amounts of black smoke coming out of exhaust during startup, and now leather seat problems where the cutout for the seatbelt is pulling away and the foam is showing, etc.

Some of these issues have been fixed, some of them haven't. It's been very frustrating to have a brand new car and have all of these issues.

Ford really needs to up their quality control, because this is out of control. I absolutely love this car. It's my favorite car I've ever owned, but this is ruining the entire experience!

Seems Pa has a lemon law. You should look into it.

Pennsylvania Lemon Law Basics

The Pennsylvania lemon law covers any consumer who buys, or leases, and registers a new motor vehicle in the state. Under the Pennsylvania Lemon Law your car may be declared a lemon if it meets all of the following conditions:

  • It has a nonconformity (a defect, or condition) the nonconformity is covered by the manufacturer's express warranty
  • The nonconformity SUBSTANTIALLY impairs the use, market value, or safety of the car
  • The nonconformity is not the result of an accident, abuse, neglect, or alteration of the car by persons other than the manufacturer or its authorized dealer
  • You reported the nonconformity at least once to the manufacturer's authorized dealer during the Pennsylvania Lemon Law Rights Period of 1 year or 12,000 miles whichever comes first.
  • You gave the manufacturer or its authorized dealer three opportunities to repair the nonconformity.
Sounds like your car wouldn't qualify, I'd try a different dealer if you haven't already

I ended up taking it up with a Lemon Law specialist. The lawyer took my case and said I definitely have a case. So the process has started... It can take up to 10 months seeing that the court hearing will be in December, unless Ford decides to offer me a settlement before then which is possible.

I guess this trim piece is substantial enough affecting the value of the car because it's been in the shop 6 times already for it, plus it's causing other issues. What a mess.
I'll keep you guys updated as things progress.

Oh nice! hey man worth a shot. A lot of times manufacturers will settle outside just to get rid of it and keep it quiet. I tried to lemon law my old jeep but fell outside of the two year period req'd in NY. A friends jeep was lemon lawed and got every single dime he'd paid towards the lease including the down payment back. Anyway good luck! keep us posted
