I've definitely seen a thread somewhere about the hub nuts coming loose... sure it was someone on here... they were told the same thing straight off (without the wheel being removed)... bearing knackered - but on proper inspection was found to be hub nut had come loose (but only on one side).

If you're a weekend cruiser, a strut brace will make no difference, if you're a driver that likes to push the car to the limit (especially round corners) then a strut brace is a must have. I'm sure there are many videos on YouTube that will explain why.
