Incorrect. The look of the fully assembled vehicle is patented. Just google US patent 664895 and click on the first link for proof.

Every car company gets a design patent to protect the appearance of each vehicle. This is done on a part by part basis (hood, fender, etc.) and the vehicle as a whole. I'm not going to guess how Ford would react considering they have become the most secretive car company.
